Learn how to make 6 roller bottle recipes for kids with aromas ranging from bright and cheery to fresh and cool, and you’ll find one that suits your kid!
Making essential oil recipes for roller bottles is a great way to apply properly diluted essential oils to the skin easily. Rollerball bottles are also excellent travel storage containers and are a great, cheap way to store each of your customized essential oil blends.
We have shared tidbits of information throughout the journal about using essential oils on kids, and it has quickly become one of our most asked questions. So we thought it would be fitting to share a master roller bottle post on the subject.
Our kids love using roller bottles, and rolling the oils is a fun little thing for them to do themselves. It gives a nice grounding routine during transition times throughout the day, and honestly it beats a fight over shoes!
Precautions Before You Roll
- Patch test first. Rub a little of the finished blend on the inside of the elbow, then leave it alone for 24 hours before you use it anywhere else.
- Citrus needs a little care in the sun. Fresh and Cool and Bright and Cheery both have citrus oils in them, so keep that skin out of the sun for 12 hours after you’ve rolled one on.
- Start with less than you think you need. You can always add another drop next time, and a blend that’s too strong is a bottle nobody’s going to reach for!
- Essential oils are very concentrated, so they always get diluted in a carrier oil before they go on skin. Have a look at our essential oil dilution chart before you mix a blend up.
- Keep essential oils out of reach of children and don’t allow use without adult supervision.
- Avoid getting essential oils in the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do roller bottles last? This depends on the shelf life of each oil in the blend and the carrier oil. We like to use them within a year to ensure everything stays fresh and the roller ball doesn’t get gunked up.
Can we dilute it more if the smell is too strong?Absolutely! You can always dilute the essential oils more (in other words, add fewer drops to the roller bottle). Just don’t dilute them less.
What is the best carrier oil for roller bottles? Our personal favorite is fractionated coconut oil (be sure it’s fractioned so it’s always in a liquid state). There are many carrier oil options, though, and each one has different benefits that may better suit you. Learn more about the options in our post on the top 10 best carrier oils.
