Small Home, Big Style: Embracing Efficient Living with Camille
Hello, wonderful readers! Happy Friday to all, and I’m absolutely thrilled to bring you another inspiring installment of our “Small Home, Big Style” feature. Today, we’re diving deep into the charming world of small space living with a very special guest who has profoundly influenced my own journey towards a more intentional, downsized lifestyle.
For many years, Camille and I have shared a unique bond as blogger friends. Her authentic stories of life in her cozy little house were, in fact, the initial spark that ignited my desire to embrace downsizing. I followed her blog religiously, captivated by how beautifully she navigated the nuances of a smaller footprint, transforming her modest dwelling into a haven of style and functionality. It was more than just pretty pictures; it was a philosophy. Her approach to maximizing every square inch, her creative solutions for everyday challenges, and her unwavering joy in her home truly resonated with me.
I distinctly remember the moment our offer on our own bungalow was accepted. My immediate thought was of Camille. I reached out to her, bubbling with excitement, proclaiming that I had finally found my perfect little sanctuary. We exchanged MLS pictures, chatted endlessly about my dreams for the house, and shared countless ideas for cute cottage kitchens or clever small space living hacks. It’s a friendship built on a shared passion for making the most of less, and I am incredibly honored to feature Camille today, as she generously opens the doors to her home and shares her invaluable insights on how she lives and loves in her small, stylish abode.
An Intimate Q&A with Camille: Unlocking the Secrets of Small Home Living
Get ready to be inspired! Camille walks us through her life in her delightful Spanish Bungalow, offering practical advice and candid reflections on the joys and challenges of living small.
Where in the world do you call home?
I live in Albany, California. It’s this wonderful, quaint little town nestled right on the side of Berkeley, providing a serene escape within the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area. The proximity to nature, the strong community feel, and the unique architecture truly make it a special place to live.
Who shares your beautiful small home with you?
Our little 1920s Spanish Bungalow is a lively hub for our family of four. It’s home to my wonderful husband, our energetic twin 9-year-old daughters, and, of course, myself. Every day is an adventure in efficient coexistence!

Do you own or rent your home?
We are incredibly fortunate and grateful to own our home. We managed to get into the market just before it experienced an exponential surge. The Bay Area has seen unprecedented growth in recent years, leading to a significant shortage of housing, so we truly count our blessings.
Could you tell us the exact size of your home?
Our home measures a cozy 1012 square feet. And believe me, those extra 12 square feet are absolutely crucial when you’re maximizing every inch!
What brings you the most joy about living in a small home?
Honestly? The cleaning! It might sound mundane, but with less space, there’s less to maintain, which frees up so much time and mental energy. It allows us to focus on what truly matters: spending quality time together as a family, pursuing hobbies, and enjoying our community, rather than being constantly bogged down by household chores. It’s a liberation, really.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve encountered in a small living space?
Our primary challenge is definitely the single, tiny bathroom. With two growing girls, it could easily become a battleground. Early on, I received a fantastic piece of advice: teach the girls that the bathroom is strictly for “potty and washing only.” No primping, no elaborate hair styling sessions! All of that happens in their respective bedrooms. I’m actively praying this strategy holds up as we approach the unpredictable teen years!
Do you have any unique or clever storage solutions you can share?
Absolutely! One of my favorite and most effective hacks is installing bars with sliding hooks, particularly from IKEA, on the back of nearly every door in our house. This seemingly simple solution provides an incredible amount of vertical storage for everything from towels and robes to accessories and bags, keeping clutter off surfaces and floors.

Which room holds your heart, and why?
My absolute favorite room is the dining room. It’s bathed in the most beautiful natural light, which instantly brightens my mood. The built-in china cabinet with its elegant glass doors not only offers practical storage but also adds immense character and charm. Above it, the rounded Spanish-style niche is a subtle nod to my upbringing in New Mexico, filling the space with warm, nostalgic memories.

Which area has presented the biggest design headache or challenge?
Without a doubt, our kitchen has been the most challenging space to work with. It’s wonderfully vintage, which we adore, but a full remodel isn’t on the cards for us anytime soon. This means we’ve had to get incredibly creative with how we utilize every bit of space. Our portable dishwasher, for instance, serves a dual purpose: its top is fitted with a butcher block, transforming it into a much-needed mobile island and additional counter space for meal prep. It’s a lifesaver in a kitchen where every surface counts.

To further enhance functionality, I built a simple yet effective breakfast bar right across one of the windows. This provides a dedicated spot for my daughters to eat their meals or tackle homework while I’m preparing dinner, allowing us to interact even in the compact space. It’s all about creating zones within a single room.

Another crucial decision was to hang all our pots and pans directly on the wall. With no available cabinet space, this not only solved a storage problem but also turned our cookware into a rustic, decorative element, adding to the kitchen’s character.

If you had the chance to do it all over again, would you still choose to live small?
Absolutely, without a moment’s hesitation! I have always been drawn to small, cozy, and intimately scaled spaces. There’s a certain magic and efficiency that comes with a compact home. In fact, my husband and I often joke that our house will be just the “right size” in about nine more years… when our daughters eventually leave home. Until then, we cherish the closeness and ingenuity required to make it work. I’m even currently dreaming about some of the incredible van conversions I keep seeing pop up on Instagram – the idea of ultra-compact, mobile living is incredibly appealing!
What’s your ultimate piece of advice for thriving in a small space?
My best advice is twofold. Firstly, always be open to tapping into others’ creative solutions for small space living. The entire tiny house movement, for example, has provided me with a wealth of innovative ideas and fresh perspectives on maximizing utility and aesthetics. Look for inspiration everywhere – blogs, social media, specialized publications. You’ll be amazed at the ingenuity out there.
Secondly, and perhaps most crucially, the absolute best piece of advice I can offer is this: keep your shit put away! It sounds blunt, but it is profoundly true. In a small home, clutter doesn’t just look messy; it creates genuine physical and mental obstacles. Every item out of place encroaches on your living area, making the space feel smaller and more chaotic than it is. Maintaining tidiness is the cheapest, easiest, and most impactful thing you can do to ensure sanity and serenity in small home living.
