Our Downsizing Journey: A Year of Transformation

One Year of Downsized Living: Our Journey to a Simpler, More Fulfilling Life

Hello everyone and happy Tuesday! It feels surreal to mark this milestone, but it’s officially been just over a year since our family embraced a significant change: moving into a downsized home. Time truly flies when you’re navigating new experiences, and our lives have undeniably transformed since settling into our charming bungalow. Today, I want to open up about this journey, sharing the profound joys and the occasional pains that come with transitioning to a home half the size of our previous one. The shifts have been deeply personal, touching both our physical environment and our emotional well-being. Every day is a new opportunity for growth and learning from a perspective we weren’t accustomed to, and I’m excited to share how we’ve been adjusting to this beautiful, albeit challenging, process.

Why We Chose to Downsize: Seeking More Beyond Square Footage

Before diving into the nuts and bolts of our experience, let’s address the most common question I receive: “Why on earth would you downsize?” The decision wasn’t made lightly, but it ultimately stemmed from an overwhelming desire for a major change in our lives. The dream of living in a cozy, character-filled older house had been a quiet longing in my heart for years, a persistent whisper that one day turned into a clear realization: it was time. Our previous home, while lovely, was always intended as a stepping stone – our entry into the housing market, not our forever sanctuary. We couldn’t afford our desired neighborhood with its beautiful period homes at the time, so we settled for a newer development, unfortunately riddled with foreclosures.

We initially told ourselves we’d stay for about five years, or until the market recovered. While we weren’t struggling, the financial burden of our larger home felt increasingly heavy. Between the soaring mortgage payments, insurance, property taxes, relentless maintenance, and utility costs, it felt like a never-ending rat race that consumed too much of our energy and resources. The allure of more space began to fade when we realized how little of it we actually utilized. Despite having ample room to spread out, our family gravitated to just a few core areas, leaving many rooms untouched and unloved. Coupled with the generic, cookie-cutter aesthetic of our neighborhood, where houses often looked identical and felt too close for comfort, and a general lack of community engagement after three years, the decision to seek something different became surprisingly easy.

Another pivotal factor was our children’s education and our family logistics. The year before our move, our daughter was accepted into a fantastic K-12 charter school, requiring a daily commute. When our son subsequently gained acceptance into the same program, we had to seriously re-evaluate the sustainability of this commute. Simultaneously, my long-held aspiration to become a work-from-home mom perfectly aligned with this new educational setup. Charter schools often require parents to arrange transportation and be highly involved, eliminating the traditional school bus option. By transitioning to a work-from-home model, we not only gained flexibility but also projected significant savings – roughly $1000 a month in before- and after-school childcare expenses. This shift presented an incredible opportunity to prioritize family time and reduce financial strain.

Perhaps most importantly, our children were a key motivator. Living amidst McMansions, we noticed a subtle but concerning shift in their expectations. Surrounded by friends who had the latest gadgets and “best” of everything, our kids were starting to develop a sense of entitlement. This was a red flag for me. It’s paramount that my children understand that the size of a home doesn’t define a person’s worth or financial status. I wanted them to grasp that true happiness isn’t bought with large houses, expensive cars, or an abundance of material possessions. Home, to me, is about the people within its walls, the love shared, and the community fostered, not merely the dwelling’s dimensions. I wanted them to see beyond societal pressures to constantly “move up” to bigger and better, understanding that a different dream, a simpler dream, holds immense value.

The Unexpected Joys of Smaller Home Living

My fondness for smaller homes isn’t new; it dates back to my childhood. My grandmother’s house, a small, humble abode in the country, always felt immeasurably vast to me. It was a place where our family created countless cherished memories, spending endless hours together. Even though my parents always lived in larger suburban houses, nothing ever quite matched the warmth and joy I felt at Grammy’s little place. The moment I stepped into our current bungalow, I knew instantly that it was ‘the one,’ evoking that same sense of comfort and belonging.

1. Embracing Character and Curb Appeal

One of the immediate and most striking advantages of our new home is its inherent character and undeniable curb appeal. Unlike our previous new-construction house, this bungalow boasts a rich history and unique architectural details. We now enjoy original white oak hardwood floors, smooth plaster walls, charming built-in niches and hutches, solid wood doors that speak of craftsmanship, a warm wood-burning fireplace, and classic checkered floors. These are the details that breathe life and personality into a home, features that simply weren’t part of the sterile, mass-produced charm of our former residence. It’s a joy to live in a space that feels genuinely distinct and lovingly crafted.

2. Effortless Maintenance and Cleaning

This might sound trivial, but the time saved on cleaning is a monumental perk. Our larger home used to demand hours of tedious effort to keep tidy. Now, I can clean and organize the entire house from top to bottom in about an hour. This drastic reduction in chores frees up precious time and mental energy, allowing me to focus on activities that truly matter, rather than endlessly battling dust bunnies and cluttered rooms.

3. Achieving Financial Freedom and Security

Cutting our square footage in half also dramatically reduced our financial responsibilities. Selling our previous house yielded a decent profit, which we strategically used to pay down existing debts and make a substantial down payment on our bungalow. This new home was purchased for significantly less than what we sold our old one for, setting us up to build considerable equity over time through targeted improvements. This proactive financial planning has not only alleviated stress but also provided a greater sense of security for our family’s future, allowing us to breathe easier.

4. Fostering Closer Family Bonds

I once read that smaller homes cultivate closer families, and I can attest to the truth of this statement. We now spend a tremendous amount of quality time together, and our children have even commented on how much they appreciate being physically closer to one another. There’s a natural intimacy that develops when spaces are shared more readily, leading to more conversations, shared laughter, and a stronger sense of unity. And yes, my “mom ears” definitely get a workout in this house, allowing me to be more present and attuned to everything happening around me!

5. Prioritizing Quality Over Quantity

Building on the financial benefits, I feel much less guilt about “splurging” on select items for our home. While I could indulge before, our smaller spaces now inspire a deliberate focus on acquiring the best possible quality. I’m completely comfortable investing more in the perfect statement chair or a beautifully crafted table because I no longer need to fill vast amounts of space with numerous, often mediocre, pieces of furniture. This shift allows us to curate a home filled with items we truly love and value, rather than just acquiring things to fill voids.

6. More House, More Freedom: Embracing Life Beyond Our Walls

This might sound paradoxical, but downsizing our house has paradoxically granted us more freedom to truly live. It’s as if a heavy weight has been lifted. We now travel more frequently and engage in more activities outside our home. Previously, the constant demands and high cost of living in our larger house made it difficult to prioritize these experiences. Now, with reduced financial strain and less home maintenance, we have the resources and the mental space to explore, create, and simply enjoy life.

7. The Dream of a Stay-at-Home Mom Realized

Perhaps the most profound benefit of our move is my ability to stay home and dedicate myself to my children and my passions. For years, being a stay-at-home mom was a cherished dream that felt unattainable in our larger house. The financial demands necessitated two steady, dependable sources of income. Downsizing made this dream a reality, allowing me to be more present for my family and pursue creative endeavors that bring me immense joy and fulfillment.

8. Discovering a Nurturing Community

We’ve been incredibly fortunate to find the most amazing neighbors and a truly wonderful sense of community in our new locale. It’s an “old school” vibe here, and we absolutely adore it. Within a week of moving in, we knew everyone on our street. Neighbors dropped by with welcome cards, homemade dishes, and open arms. We’ve enjoyed block parties, informal gatherings, and a genuine feeling of mutual support – watching over one another like extended family. This level of connection was something we truly missed in our previous, more isolated neighborhood.

9. Embracing a Simpler Way of Life

Life has become undeniably simpler, and I revel in the ease with which day-to-day tasks now flow. The process of cutting back, decluttering, and living with less has felt like a profound breath of fresh air. It’s not just about less cleaning; it’s about less mental clutter, less consumerism, and more appreciation for the essentials. This deliberate shift towards a minimalist mindset has brought a newfound tranquility to our lives, allowing us to focus on experiences and relationships over possessions.

Navigating the Hurdles: Challenges of Downsizing

While our move has been overwhelmingly positive, it would be disingenuous to say it’s been without its bumps. There are definitely some unique challenges that come with cutting your living space by half almost overnight, and we’re still learning to navigate them.

1. The Single Bathroom Dilemma

This is, without a doubt, at the top of our “challenges” list: sharing a single bathroom is NOT ideal! In our previous home, we enjoyed the luxury of three bathrooms. Transitioning to just one with three girls and a little boy has been, shall we say, “interesting” at best. Our daughter, Naomi, particularly struggles with it. It was almost a deal-breaker for the house, but we knew we eventually planned to add on and build a new bathroom. That day cannot come fast enough!

2. The Missing Master Bedroom

As I’ve mentioned before, we currently don’t have a designated master bedroom. Our eldest daughter now occupies what would traditionally be the master, while my husband and I are making do in a room originally designed as a den. We’re certainly making it work, adapting the space to suit our needs, but we eagerly await the day we can finally have a legitimate, dedicated master suite – complete with, you guessed it, its own bathroom.

3. The Ongoing Battle of Purging for a Maximalist

This one is particularly tough for me, as I confess to being a maximalist at heart. I genuinely and sincerely love every single item that enters my home. I adore rooms that feel full, layered, and rich with collected treasures, so the constant need to purge and let go of possessions has been a significant emotional hurdle. Finding a place for everything in a smaller space is an ongoing challenge, and it’s a battle I continue to fight with my innate desire to collect and display.

4. Missing a Spacious Dining Area

One aspect I truly miss is a large dining space. I absolutely love entertaining and hosting elaborate dinner parties. We had to part with our huge dining table during the move, and it’s been challenging not being able to comfortably seat ten guests at a single table. While we’ve found creative ways to adapt and still host gatherings, I do yearn for the grandeur and ease of a more expansive dining area for those special occasions.

5. Our Daughter’s Adjustment Journey

The transition has been particularly challenging for our eldest daughter. At twelve years old when we made the move, leaving our old house felt like a major loss for her. She gravitates towards new homes and, in her eyes, “the bigger, the better.” It took a considerable amount of time for her to fully grasp and appreciate living in a smaller home. However, as her friends visit and express how much they adore our cozy bungalow, she’s slowly but surely starting to see its charm and beauty through their eyes. It’s a journey of perspective, and she’s gracefully navigating it.

Our Conclusion: A Right Decision for Our Family

Despite these challenges, I remain incredibly grateful and happy that we took the plunge into downsized living. It has truly proven to be the perfect decision for our family at this stage of our lives. After extensive reading, research, and careful consideration of all the pros and cons, we moved forward because we genuinely believed it would benefit us in profound ways, and it absolutely has. It hasn’t been a fairytale of “peaches and rainbows” every single day, and I must emphasize that this lifestyle is definitely NOT for everyone. We found immense inspiration in the downsizing journeys of others, like Dana and Carmella, which greatly helped us determine if this path aligned with our deepest desires.

Ultimately, downsizing isn’t just about reducing square footage; it’s about fundamentally shifting your perspective, altering the way you think about home, possessions, and life itself. It permeates so many areas of your existence, from finances to family dynamics to personal freedom. For us, in the grand scheme of things, we unequivocally made the right decision. Our journey into a smaller home has led to a richer, more intentional, and ultimately more fulfilling life.

Until next time, loves…..
