Embrace Tranquility: Transforming a Primary Bedroom with Evergreen Fog SW 9130, Sherwin-Williams’ 2022 Color of the Year

Hello, home design enthusiasts! It’s that exhilarating time of year again when Sherwin-Williams unveils its highly anticipated Color of the Year! Having had the privilege of collaborating with Sherwin-Williams for the 2021 Color of the Year reveal, I am absolutely delighted to be back, celebrating their 12th annual announcement. The spotlight this year shines brightly on a hue that promises to redefine our living spaces: the captivating Evergreen Fog SW 9130. This selection perfectly encapsulates the growing desire for calm, balance, and a deeper connection to the natural world within our homes.

I am beyond thrilled about this particular shade! Evergreen Fog is far more than just a color; it’s an experience. This beautiful, muted green, subtly infused with grey undertones, radiates an immediate sense of serenity and equilibrium. It effortlessly brings the soothing energy of nature indoors, creating an organic and grounding atmosphere that promotes relaxation and well-being. Its incredible versatility means it can adapt to various design styles, from modern minimalist to rustic farmhouse, making it a true designer’s dream. The moment I laid eyes on it, a particular project came instantly to mind – one that perfectly embodied the essence of this remarkable shade.

Creating a Sanctuary: A Primary Bedroom Makeover with Evergreen Fog

One of my dearest friends recently made a significant life change, downsizing from a much larger home to a new, more manageable space, all while raising two young children. This move, similar to my own journey into small home living, presented both challenges and exciting opportunities. As a passionate advocate for efficient, joyful small-space living, I was eager to help them transform their new house into a comforting sanctuary. My goal was to make their transition as smooth and special as possible, and what better way to do that than by creating a truly relaxing primary bedroom where they could unwind and recharge? Let’s take a look at the “before” state of the room – a blank canvas awaiting its transformation.

We started with a completely white, rather stark room, presenting a few distinct challenges. The primary bedroom, like many in smaller homes, offered a limited footprint, meaning every design decision needed to maximize both aesthetics and functionality. Storage, as always in smaller spaces, was a key consideration. Furthermore, and perhaps the most exciting aspect for me, was the extremely limited budget. My friends had just moved in and were wisely prioritizing other, more extensive renovations in other areas of their home. This meant our primary bedroom project would rely heavily on creative re-use, clever DIY techniques, and the incredible transformative power of paint. They also preferred to avoid any structural changes, embracing the room “as is.” For a designer who loves the challenge of zero-to-low budget makeovers, this was a dream come true, and I couldn’t wait to begin!

The Power of a Unified Color Palette: Embracing Evergreen Fog

My vision for this bedroom was to fully immerse the space in the serene embrace of Evergreen Fog. To achieve this, we painted every single surface – the walls, the trim, the ceiling, and even the doors – in this singular, breathtaking hue. I am a staunch advocate for the technique of flushing color over an entire space, from floor to ceiling. This design choice works wonders, especially in smaller rooms, as it creates an optical illusion of greater expansiveness. By eliminating visual breaks in color, the eye flows seamlessly across the room, making it feel larger and more cohesive. Beyond the illusion of space, this monochromatic approach significantly elevates the overall aesthetic, adding a layer of sophistication and highlighting architectural details in a subtle yet impactful way. After some thoughtful planning and crafty styling, the finished room emerged as a true haven. Behold the transformation!

I couldn’t be more pleased with how this space ultimately came together. The overarching goal was to craft a room that felt inherently natural, effortlessly easy-going, yet profoundly relaxing and comfortable. My friends expressed a desire for a space devoid of excessive frills or ornate decorations, preferring a design that drew its cues directly from nature. This manifested in the thoughtful inclusion of lush green plants and layers of rich, tactile textures. The project was not only fulfilling but also incredibly fun, as it involved treasure hunting both within their existing belongings and my own garage to find the perfect additions that would complement the newly painted space.

Clever Solutions for Small Spaces: Functionality Meets Style

Working with small spaces is a delightful challenge because it inherently encourages creative problem-solving, particularly when it comes to maximizing functionality. My friend embraces a minimalist lifestyle and doesn’t require extensive bedside storage, but still needed a practical surface for a few essential items. Our solution was both simple and elegant: we upcycled a basic shelf, mounted above the bed with inexpensive brackets, providing just enough space for a book, a glass of water, or a small decorative object. For an innovative and unique alternative to traditional curtains, she masterfully DIY’d a macrame screen for the window. This handmade piece not only offers essential privacy but also functions beautifully as a piece of art, resembling a stunning textile tapestry. Its intricate design adds a touch of bohemian charm and visual interest to the room, and I absolutely adore it!

Artistic Flair: Coordinating Colors and Personalized Accents

One of my absolute favorite aspects of this year’s Color of the Year launch is the emphasis on using beautiful coordinating colors as harmonious accents. My friend, being a talented artist herself, was keen to infuse her personal creative touch into the space. She decided to paint abstract accents around the room – subtle stripes, organic shapes, and clean lines – using a sophisticated palette of Sherwin-Williams hues: Shoji White SW 7042, Accessible Beige SW 7036, and Tricorn Black SW 6258. These carefully chosen details add significant visual interest and depth to the room, pairing exquisitely with the gorgeous, moody tones of Evergreen Fog. The combination creates a refined yet earthy feel, demonstrating how personal artistic expression can truly elevate a space.

Prioritizing Your Primary Bedroom: A Place for Restoration

All too often, we dedicate our initial decorating efforts to every other room in the house – the living room, kitchen, or guest spaces – leaving the primary bedroom until last. I consistently advocate for homeowners to prioritize this space, especially those with children, as it serves as a vital haven for relaxation and restoration at the end of a long day. A primary bedroom should be a personal sanctuary, a place where you can truly decompress and find peace. I couldn’t be happier with how this room manifested that philosophy. This project was a perfect testament to the immense power of paint, the boundless potential of creativity, and the joy of breathing new life into cherished old possessions. The resulting space feels utterly natural, richly textured, and profoundly relaxing, offering a much-needed escape from daily demands.
