Fall 2015 Home Decor Inspiration from Bloggers

Hello, wonderful readers! It feels like ages since we last connected, doesn’t it? After a whirlwind summer filled with cherished family visits and exciting travels, I’m thrilled to finally be back and catch you all up on what’s been happening in our little bungalow. There’s no better way to mark my return and usher in the beauty of a new season than with a delightful fall home tour, offering you a cozy peek into our refreshed space.

Welcome Back: Embracing the Magic of Fall in Our Bungalow!

The air is beginning to carry a hint of crispness, leaves are hinting at their vibrant transformations, and there’s an undeniable warmth settling into our homes and hearts. Fall, with its inviting textures and comforting colors, is swiftly becoming my absolute favorite season. And what better way to celebrate its arrival than by participating in the much-anticipated “Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours”?

The Heart of Seasonal Decor: Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours

I am absolutely delighted and deeply honored to once again be a part of this incredible event. A huge thank you to my dear blog friend, Lindsay, over at The White Buffalo Styling Co, for tirelessly hosting and curating such a magnificent lineup of talented bloggers and their stunning homes. These tours are an unparalleled source of inspiration, offering endless ideas on how to infuse seasonal charm into every corner of your living space. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see diverse styles and approaches to fall decor, and I always leave feeling creatively recharged.

If you’re joining us from Michelle’s wonderfully fresh and cozy home at Iron & Twine, a warm welcome to our bungalow! Didn’t you just adore her outdoor space? It’s absolutely perfect for those enchanting, crisp fall evenings. For those new to SG Style, my name is Shavonda, and alongside my family, we embarked on a journey into downsized living about a year ago. We traded our sprawling, newer construction, builder-basic tract home for a charming, albeit half-the-size, 1940s cottage bungalow fixer-upper. This past year has been a continuous adventure of slowly updating our home while simultaneously adjusting to the unique rhythm of life in smaller digs. Every room, quite literally, feels perpetually “under construction,” but that hasn’t stopped me from adding a touch of autumnal magic for the season!

Our Journey: Downsizing to a Charming 1940s Bungalow

Choosing to downsize was a significant decision for our family, a conscious pivot away from the conventional “more is better” mindset. Our 1940s bungalow, with its inherent character and compact footprint, offered a compelling counter-narrative to our previous larger home. It presented us with the exciting challenge of maximizing every square inch, encouraging intentional living, and fostering a deeper connection with our surroundings. This year has been a masterclass in creative problem-solving, from innovative storage solutions to multi-functional furniture, all while preserving the vintage soul of this charming cottage. While the renovation journey is ongoing, each small update brings us closer to our vision, transforming a fixer-upper into a deeply personal haven. Embracing small-space living has taught us the value of quality over quantity and the joy of a home that feels intimately tailored to our lives.

Styling for a “California Fall”: Cozy Layers and Warm Hues

Despite living in sunny California where temperatures often remain high well into autumn, my heart still yearns for the cozy embrace of fall. My approach to seasonal decorating, especially in a smaller home, is all about creating an atmosphere rather than overcrowding spaces with heavy, traditional decor. This means adding abundant layers of comfort and warmth through carefully chosen textiles. Think plush pillows, faux fur throws draped over sofas and chairs, and soft, inviting blankets that beckon you to snuggle up. These elements not only add texture and depth but also create an immediate sense of coziness, instantly transforming a space without drastic changes. And, of course, no California fall styling is complete for me without the vibrant cheer of sunflowers. Their golden hues bridge the gap between late summer sunshine and the rich palette of autumn, bringing a fresh, natural touch to every room.

A Glimpse Inside: Our Fall Bungalow Home Tour

Join me now as we step inside and explore how these subtle touches and intentional layers have brought the spirit of fall to our beloved bungalow. I’ve focused on creating inviting vignettes that feel both seasonal and perfectly suited to our compact, character-filled home.

The Welcoming Threshold: Our Fall Front Door & Entryway

First impressions are everything, even in a small home. Our front door and compact entryway are the first spaces to welcome guests, so I like to imbue them with a sense of seasonal hospitality. A wreath on the door, perhaps incorporating natural elements like eucalyptus or wheat, immediately sets a warm tone. Inside, the entryway receives a simple but impactful update – a small rug with an inviting texture, a delicate floral arrangement (sunflowers, naturally!), and perhaps a basket for collecting everyday essentials. These small additions create a subtle transition from the outside world into our cozy fall retreat, making every arrival feel special.

The Living Room: A Haven of Autumn Comfort

The living room is truly the heart of our home, a space where family gathers and memories are made. For fall, I’ve transformed it into a haven of autumn comfort through an intentional layering of textiles and natural accents. The sofa is adorned with an assortment of plush throw pillows in varying textures—think chunky knits, soft velvets, and warm faux furs—creating an irresistible invitation to sink in and relax. Over the armrest, a generously sized throw blanket in a warm, earthy tone adds an extra layer of visual and tactile comfort. Simple decorative elements, such as a vase filled with vibrant sunflowers or a rustic wooden bowl on the coffee table, reinforce the seasonal theme without overwhelming the compact space. Each element works in harmony to create a warm, inviting atmosphere perfect for leisurely evenings.

Our Beloved Reading Nook: Escaping into Fall Stories

Every home needs a dedicated spot for quiet contemplation, and our reading nook truly shines in the fall. This cozy corner is where I escape with a good book and a warm cup of tea, and for the cooler months, it’s been made even more inviting. A soft, oversized cushion and a faux fur throw make the seating area incredibly comfortable, inviting you to curl up for hours. Nearby, a small side table holds a stack of current reads, a fragrant candle, and perhaps a tiny vase with a single sunflower, offering a burst of color. The emphasis here is on creating a sense of intimate sanctuary, a place where one can truly unwind and immerse themselves in the tranquility of the season. It’s a testament to how even the smallest spaces can be transformed into personal havens.

Outdoor Serenity: Our Fall Porch Retreat

Even though California isn’t known for chilly autumns, extending our cozy living to the outdoors is still a priority. Our porch, though modest, becomes a perfect spot for enjoying the mild fall air. Here, I’ve brought out weather-resistant pillows and throws in fall-inspired colors, inviting us to linger with a morning coffee or an evening drink. Potted mums in rich burgundy and golden hues, alongside a simple corn husk bundle or a few ornamental gourds, add seasonal charm without demanding much space. It’s a gentle nod to the season, demonstrating how easily a small outdoor area can be transformed into an inviting fall retreat, blurring the lines between indoor comfort and the refreshing outdoors. Even in our smaller bungalow, every space is utilized to its full potential.

Bedroom Bliss: A Cozy Escape for Cooler Nights

Our bedroom, a personal sanctuary, also receives a seasonal refresh to enhance its sense of tranquility and warmth for the cooler nights ahead. The primary focus is on creating a layered, inviting bed. I’ve introduced extra soft linens, a plush duvet, and an abundance of decorative pillows in comforting textures and soothing fall tones. A chunky knit throw draped at the foot of the bed adds an additional touch of luxury and warmth. On the bedside tables, simple accents like a small bouquet of wildflowers or a scented candle contribute to a serene and calming atmosphere. These subtle yet impactful changes ensure that our bedroom remains a peaceful retreat, perfectly aligned with the quiet introspection that autumn often inspires. It’s a testament to how even practical spaces can be styled to evoke a strong seasonal feeling.
