Crafting Your Perfect Summer Outdoor Oasis with POLYWOOD

Happy Summer, dear friends! As the days grow longer and the sunshine bathes everything in its golden glow, there’s an undeniable magic in the air. This season, my absolute favorite time of year, brings with it a special kind of joy – and today, I’m thrilled to share a project that embodies everything I adore about summer living.

Our Bungalow Backyard Transformation: From Overgrown Chaos to an Inviting Outdoor Oasis

For me, nothing quite compares to the warmth of long, sun-drenched days, filled with the distinctive sights, soothing sounds, and vibrant life that only summer can truly deliver. It’s a season I anticipate with great excitement annually, and this year feels particularly momentous because we’ve finally embarked on the much-anticipated transformation of our backyard. Having called our charming bungalow home for five years, and now entering our fourth full summer here, this project has been a long time in the making.

When we first moved into this property, the backyard presented a formidable challenge. It was a space teeming with a collection of trees haphazardly placed, a dilapidated deck that sagged under its own weight, and an old, rusted metal pergola that offered little in the way of charm or shelter. Adding to the scene was an unsavory shed that seemed to attract all manner of unwelcome critters, and a fence that was not only falling apart but was also completely consumed by our neighbors’ ambitious ivy. Despite these overwhelming conditions, the yard boasted an expansive layout—more space, in fact, than we initially knew how to handle or envision.

Before: Dilapidated metal pergola and neglected garden space

It truly required some serious vision to look past the overwhelming “hot mess” we inherited. But deep down, I always believed this home and its expansive yard held the potential to become something truly extraordinary. After dedicating the past four years to methodically clearing out the chaos—removing the unwanted trees, dismantling the decaying structures, and reclaiming the space—we are now, finally, poised to bring this area together in a meaningful and intentional way, crafting an outdoor sanctuary we’ve always dreamed of.

The Vision: Four Zones for Ultimate Outdoor Living and Entertainment

Our backyard’s generous size presented a fantastic opportunity, and we decided to maximize its potential by creating four distinct, functional zones: a dedicated space for outdoor dining, a serene area for lounging and relaxation, an inviting spot for entertaining guests, and a practical zone for gardening. One of our family’s most cherished activities is camping and immersing ourselves in nature, and we absolutely adore gathering around a crackling campfire. Naturally, integrating a proper fire pit into our entertainment zone was a non-negotiable item on our wish list. Last year, in an effort to have at least a temporary solution, I quickly assembled a makeshift fire pit using some pavers salvaged from another part of the yard. While it certainly served its purpose, it was admittedly a bit sad-looking.

I definitely envisioned a much more aesthetically pleasing and functional arrangement for our fire pit area. To bring this elevated vision to life, we began collaborating with a talented local landscape designer. Their expertise has been invaluable in helping us refine and pull together our comprehensive plan for the entire yard. While we’re still fine-tuning some crucial details, such as the specific plantings, the optimal lighting scheme, and the irrigation system, we have successfully finalized the design and layout for the fire pit zone. This initial step has truly set the stage for the rest of our backyard transformation, giving us a solid foundation to build upon.

Partnering with POLYWOOD: Sustainable Style for Our Outdoor Space

Just as we were deep into planning our backyard oasis, an exciting opportunity arose: POLYWOOD reached out about a potential partnership for their #RethinkOutdoor campaign this summer. I was absolutely thrilled and immediately on board! I was already well acquainted with POLYWOOD and have long admired their stunning, high-quality Adirondack chairs, often finding myself gravitating towards them and test-sitting whenever I spot them at Home Goods. Their reputation for durability and classic design always impressed me.

Armed with our refined backyard design plan and a clear overall idea of the aesthetic I wanted for the space, I utilized a fantastic resource: the POLYWOOD Outdoor Furniture Planner Quiz. This interactive and user-friendly tool proved incredibly helpful in solidifying the specifics for our fire pit zone. It expertly guided me through crucial steps, from accurately measuring our space (even accommodating its irregular shape) to selecting the perfect POLYWOOD furniture pieces that aligned flawlessly with our specific needs and desired style aesthetic. It took all the guesswork out of the process, ensuring our selections would be ideal.

Building Our Dream Fire Pit: A Hands-On Transformation

Once all the design details were meticulously worked out, my family and I eagerly rolled up our sleeves and got to work. It was a demanding two-day endeavor, filled with strenuous digging, hauling heavy materials, and carefully loading them into place. Yet, with a shared vision and collective effort, we successfully completed the task. I documented much of the process of how we constructed these spaces on Instagram and saved it to a highlight, so feel free to check it out for a more in-depth look at the behind-the-scenes action!

My partner, Michael, was an absolute rockstar throughout the entire process, providing invaluable assistance every step of the way. He virtually single-handedly relocated and meticulously rebuilt the fire pit pavers, showcasing incredible dedication and skill. We are absolutely overjoyed with how the entire area turned out, exceeding our expectations. For the construction, we thoughtfully incorporated a blend of materials: we repurposed existing pavers from other areas of our yard, giving them a new life, and complemented these with beautiful decorative rocks sourced from a local rock yard, adding texture and visual interest.

We strategically utilized the pavers from the original, temporary fire pit, simply shifting them a few feet to perfectly center the new structure on the corner of the back fence. To introduce an elegant accent, we encircled the base of the fire pit with charming cobbles, and for the border, we incorporated bricks from a collection we’ve been gathering over time. For the ground cover within the area, we selected 3/8″ salt and pepper decorative rocks. When I visited the rock yard, I was immediately captivated by the subtle yet beautiful color variations in these stones, especially envisioning how wonderfully they would complement the sleek black Adirondack chairs we planned to introduce into the space.

I have always had an enduring love for the classic Adirondack chair and have dreamed of owning a set for years. POLYWOOD offers an absolutely fantastic selection of Adirondack styles, ranging from sleek modern designs to charming beachy aesthetics, available in an impressive array of colors. After careful consideration, I completely fell in love with the graceful lines and inviting curves of the Vineyard Curveback Adirondack Chairs. We ultimately opted for two sets, each complete with matching side tables, to perfectly furnish our new fire pit area. I also have a deep appreciation for the robust and comfortable Classic Oversized Curveback Adirondack, which offers an equally luxurious lounging experience.

We truly adore our new chairs! They are not only incredibly beautiful and aesthetically pleasing, but also remarkably comfortable, making them the ideal spot for extended relaxation. The thoughtful curve-back detail provides exceptional support, enhancing the overall seating experience. With their generous depth and a gentle recline, these chairs are perfectly designed for hours of unwinding and lounging, whether it’s enjoying a quiet afternoon or gathering around the fire pit late into the evening.

Beyond their undeniable aesthetic appeal, incredible durability, and exceptional weather resistance—backed by an impressive 20-year warranty—my absolute favorite aspect of POLYWOOD is the company’s profound commitment to waste reduction and environmental sustainability. It’s truly inspiring to know that POLYWOOD actively recycles over 400,000 milk jugs every single day, transforming this post-consumer waste into their high-quality, all-weather outdoor furniture. This dedication to eco-friendly practices allows us to enjoy beautiful, lasting furniture while also making a positive impact on the planet, which is something we deeply value as a family.

Styling and Enjoying Our New Outdoor Sanctuary

To infuse the space with even more character and functionality, we thoughtfully added a few finishing touches. A painted log, which has been a beloved piece of decor since our last house, now serves as a fun and unique extra seating option, adding a touch of rustic charm. We also strung up a set of warm, solar-powered string lights, creating a magical ambiance as dusk settles. Finally, a selection of soft textiles, like throw blankets and pillows, provides an inviting warmth and comfort, perfect for cozy evenings outdoors. These small additions truly pulled the entire area together, making it feel complete and welcoming.

We’ve been absolutely loving and thoroughly enjoying our new outdoor sanctuary; it has quickly become a beloved extension of our home. Interestingly enough, the kids have developed a particular fondness for starting their mornings out here, enjoying breakfast amidst the fresh air and sounds of nature. Beyond that, we’ve already had the pleasure of hosting friends for delightful s’mores nights, officially “breaking in” the space with laughter and good company. From quiet contemplation to lively gatherings, this area is truly living up to its potential as a hub of family life and entertainment.

This project has truly surpassed our wildest expectations, turning out far better than we could have ever imagined. What was once a neglected, sad, and entirely unused back corner of our yard has blossomed into the perfect inviting space for entertaining, relaxing, and gathering with our family and friends. The area actually ended up being slightly larger than our initial estimates, comfortably accommodating another set of chairs. Given its popularity, we will likely be ordering one more set to complete the seating arrangement. We’ve also already placed an order for an additional string of solar lights to further enhance the warm and festive ambiance, ensuring every corner glows beautifully.

I couldn’t be happier to see this significant project finally complete. A huge thank you goes out to POLYWOOD for their incredible partnership, for helping us truly #RethinkOutdoor, and for giving us such a fantastic jump start on our comprehensive backyard renovation!
