Small Home, Big Style: Discovering Inspiration in Nusaiba’s Queens Apartment

Welcome back, design enthusiasts and advocates for intentional living! We are absolutely thrilled to re-launch our cherished “Small Home Big Style” series. This platform is dedicated to showcasing real individuals who thrive in compact living spaces, sharing their invaluable insights, creative solutions, and inspiring journeys. Our mission is to demonstrate that square footage is merely a number; true style and comfort are crafted through thoughtful design and personal expression.

For those new to our community, “Small Home Big Style” champions the ingenuity and spirit of small home dwellers. We feature individuals who generously open their doors, revealing how they navigate the unique joys and challenges of living in modest-sized homes. From clever storage hacks to innovative layout strategies, each feature is packed with practical advice and visual inspiration, proving that a smaller footprint can lead to a richer, more focused life.

This beloved series first began two years ago under our previous blog, “A Home Full Of Color.” We had the privilege of featuring numerous remarkable homes, each radiating unique charm and intelligent design. Unfortunately, during our transition from A Home Full Of Color to SG Style, much of that original content was inadvertently lost. It was a significant disappointment, as those stories held immense value for our readers. We are actively exploring ways to reconnect with those past homeowners, perhaps to bring you updated features and revisit their evolving spaces.

However, we’re looking forward! We are making a firm commitment to consistency. “Small Home Big Style” is now a permanent fixture on our weekly calendar, bringing you fresh inspiration every Monday. We understand the importance of regular, high-quality content, and we’re dedicated to delivering just that. No more excuses; we’re holding ourselves accountable to ensure a steady stream of engaging stories and practical advice for living beautifully in a small home. With that renewed promise, it’s our absolute pleasure to introduce you to today’s extraordinary guest: Nusaiba, a master of chic small-space living in the heart of New York City.

Meet Nusaiba: Crafting an Elegant Life in a Queens Apartment

Our connection with Nusaiba began earlier this year through Instagram, where she initially reached out for details about our kitchen island. What started as a simple inquiry quickly evolved into a delightful discovery. We soon realized Nusaiba possessed an exceptional sense of style and a keen eye for design that resonated deeply with our blog’s aesthetic. Beyond her impeccable taste, she is genuinely gorgeous and incredibly sweet. It was immediately clear that her beautifully curated home would be a perfect fit for our “Small Home Big Style” series. We are incredibly excited and grateful to have her here today, sharing a personal and inspiring look at how she and her husband live and love in their charming Queens apartment.

Nusaiba’s journey into small-home living offers a particularly compelling narrative, especially for those navigating the vibrant, often space-constrained, urban landscape of New York City. Her approach emphasizes thoughtful design and smart choices without ever compromising on elegance or comfort. Let’s delve into her insights and discover the secrets behind her beautifully balanced and highly functional home.

Nusaiba’s Insights: Living Large in a Small NYC Space

Where/What city do you live in? Queens, New York

Living in Queens, New York, offers a fascinating backdrop for small-home living. The dynamic energy and cultural richness of NYC are unparalleled, but they often come with the practical reality of compact living spaces. For residents like Nusaiba, this means that every square foot becomes precious, demanding creative design solutions and a strong focus on efficiency. Her ability to carve out a serene and stylish haven amidst the bustling cityscape is a testament to the power of intentional design and resourceful living. It demonstrates that a fulfilling, enriching life in one of the world’s most exciting cities does not require vast amounts of space.

Who do you share your home with? My husband

Sharing a small home with a partner requires a special blend of communication, compromise, and a shared vision for the living environment. Nusaiba and her husband have clearly cultivated a space that caters to both their needs and preferences, underscoring the importance of mutual respect and collaborative decision-making in compact living arrangements. Their harmonious coexistence within their home speaks volumes about their thoughtful approach to shared space and personal boundaries.

Do you own or rent? We rent

Renting a small apartment, particularly in a high-cost-of-living area like New York City, often provides significant flexibility and financial advantages. As Nusaiba will touch upon, it allows residents to immerse themselves in urban life without the substantial upfront costs and long-term commitments associated with homeownership. While renters might have limitations on permanent structural changes, Nusaiba’s home beautifully illustrates how personal style can still flourish through decor, furniture choices, and clever temporary design solutions, making a rented space truly feel like home.

How many sq ft is your home? between 700 and 800 sq ft (duplex, but 1 floor is really an attic)

A 700-800 sq ft duplex, especially one where an entire floor functions as an attic, presents a unique and intriguing spatial dynamic. This structure inherently offers a division of space, which can be an immense asset in a small home, allowing for distinct zones for various activities. The “attic” designation often suggests architectural quirks such as sloped ceilings or exposed beams, presenting both design challenges and wonderful opportunities to create cozy, character-filled nooks. It encourages vertical thinking, creative storage integration, and the ingenious use of unconventional areas to maximize the home’s overall utility and charm.

What do you love most about living in a small home? Nothing is too far away (great for late night cravings, not so great for getting your steps in). Also, cleaning isn’t so daunting when there’s less space to clean.

The inherent convenience of a small home is undeniably one of its most attractive features. From the quick reach for a snack during a late-night movie to the significantly reduced effort required for tidying up, daily tasks become less overwhelming. This close proximity creates a sense of intimacy and coziness, fostering an immediate feeling of home. Furthermore, the diminished cleaning burden frees up valuable time and mental energy, allowing for more leisure, hobbies, or simply relaxing. It’s a subtle yet profound benefit that contributes significantly to a less stressful and more enjoyable daily life.

What challenges have you faced? Living without a dining room, having a tiny kitchen, no space to truly entertain, not being able to buy furniture pieces I loved because of limited space

Nusaiba candidly articulates some of the most common and relatable challenges faced by those in small spaces. The absence of a dedicated dining room often necessitates creative multi-functional furniture, such as a convertible table or a breakfast bar that doubles as a workspace. A tiny kitchen is another universal pain point, demanding ingenious storage solutions and rigorous organization to maximize every available inch. The desire to host larger gatherings can be tricky, often inspiring hosts to explore outdoor spaces, casual potlucks, or more intimate, cozy get-togethers. Lastly, the familiar disappointment of discovering the perfect furniture piece only to realize its scale is incompatible with your space is a testament to the need for thoughtful, precise selections in small-home design.

Any unique storage solutions? I try to find storage wherever I can..a storage ottoman as a window seat, extra sheets and pillows hiding in the sofa bed, and lots of clothes in the 6 drawers of our queen sized bed.

This is precisely where the creativity of small-space living shines through – in the innovative integration of storage. Nusaiba’s solutions are exemplary instances of multi-functional furniture and concealed compartments. A storage ottoman effectively serves as both a comfortable window seat and a discreet repository for blankets, books, or seasonal decor. Utilizing the often-overlooked internal space of a sofa bed for linens and pillows is a brilliant way to keep essentials handy without encroaching on valuable closet or drawer space. Moreover, a queen-sized bed equipped with six integrated drawers is a masterclass in maximizing under-bed real estate, providing ample room for clothing, accessories, or infrequently used items. These examples brilliantly underscore the “every inch counts” philosophy that is absolutely crucial for optimizing compact homes.

What’s your favorite room in your home? The attic has surprisingly been my favorite. It has one tiny room that I’ve set up as a one woman gym and a larger room that doubles as an office and guest room. But mostly we use the sofa bed to veg out and watch Netflix on the projector.

It’s truly inspiring how an attic, often relegated to forgotten storage, can become the vibrant heart of a small home. Nusaiba’s utilization of her attic space is a magnificent demonstration of versatility and intelligent design. Transforming a tiny room into a personal home gym not only eliminates the need for expensive gym memberships but also integrates fitness seamlessly into daily life. The larger room, cleverly functioning as both a productive home office and a welcoming guest room, perfectly embodies the adaptable nature essential for successful small-space living. The ingenious integration of a projector for Netflix nights on the sofa bed provides a cinematic experience without requiring a dedicated media room, creating a flexible entertainment zone that effortlessly transitions between work and relaxation. This multi-purpose approach is a cornerstone of thriving in smaller footprints.

Which space has been the biggest headache! You know, the one that’s been the most challenging to work with? Having a tiny kitchen has been the biggest challenge. It’s hard to store groceries without a pantry or sufficient cabinet space or to even have two people in the kitchen at once.

The challenge of a tiny kitchen is a common refrain among small-home dwellers, and Nusaiba’s experience resonates deeply. She pinpoints the core issues: severely limited storage for groceries and a palpable lack of sufficient counter and cabinet space, transforming even basic meal preparation into a strategic, Tetris-like operation. The difficulty of comfortably accommodating two people simultaneously in such a confined area truly underscores the need for highly organized workflows and perhaps even pre-assigned “kitchen duty” roles! Practical solutions often involve embracing vertical storage (think wall-mounted shelves, magnetic knife strips, or elegant pot racks), investing in slim rolling carts for extra prep space or storage, and a diligent approach to paring down kitchen gadgets to only the absolute essentials. It’s a space that truly puts one’s organizational prowess and commitment to efficiency to the ultimate test.

Do you every wish you had more space? Definitely. One day, we hope to have a family and I’m not sure how we could manage that in under 800 sq ft.

This is a deeply honest and widely shared consideration for couples and individuals living in small homes. While current arrangements might be perfectly suited for their lifestyle, the prospect of a growing family naturally brings the desire and often the need for more space. Nusaiba’s candor here is refreshing, acknowledging that while small living offers numerous present benefits, it also necessitates practical foresight and planning for future life stages. Many families successfully raise children in compact homes by prioritizing ruthless decluttering, maximizing vertical storage, fostering outdoor activities, and investing in multi-functional children’s furniture, but it undeniably requires thoughtful preparation, creativity, and a willingness to adapt.

If you could do it all over again, would you still choose to live small? Yes. My husband and I are young and I’ve just finished graduate school and begun working. Not having a huge rent (at least by NYC standards) or mortgage the past few years has been a blessing.

Nusaiba’s emphatic “yes” to choosing small living again speaks volumes about the significant financial advantages, particularly for young professionals navigating a high-cost-of-living city like New York. The reduced financial burden of lower rent or the complete absence of a mortgage provides immense freedom and flexibility. This financial liberation allows individuals to prioritize career growth, pursue further education, build savings, or invest in passions without the constant, heavy pressure of exorbitant housing expenses. This financial empowerment is often a primary, compelling driver for choosing small-home living and can contribute profoundly to overall life satisfaction, reduced stress, and the achievement of long-term personal and professional goals.

Best piece of small space living advice? Don’t be afraid to add lots of textures and accessories. I tried to keep it minimal when I first moved in to avoid clutter, but the space just looked bare and uninviting. It didn’t start to feel like home until I had added pieces that I truly loved, like my layered rugs, throw pillows, and lots of brass and copper accessories. Despite being small, the space is constantly changing. Nusaiba's beautifully styled interior showcasing a rich mix of textures and accessories.

This is arguably the most impactful and empowering piece of advice for anyone looking to decorate a small home! There’s a persistent misconception that small spaces must be starkly minimalist to avoid feeling cluttered. However, as Nusaiba so wisely points out, this often leads to a cold, impersonal, and ultimately uninviting atmosphere. The true genius lies in the strategic and intentional layering of textures and the thoughtful selection of accessories. Layered rugs, for instance, instantly add warmth, define distinct zones, and introduce visual interest and depth without consuming additional physical space. Plush throw pillows and cozy blankets instantly invite comfort and infuse vibrant personality. Brass and copper accessories, with their reflective qualities and rich, warm hues, add sophistication, a touch of luxury, and visual complexity, making the space feel more curated and less cramped. The beauty of this approach is in choosing pieces you genuinely adore, allowing your home to evolve organically and reflect your changing style and tastes. This ensures your small home feels intimate, exceptionally cozy, and deeply personal, transcending mere functionality to become a true sanctuary.

Nusaiba’s inspiring journey reinforces several crucial lessons and provides actionable takeaways for anyone navigating the world of small-home living:

  • Intentionality is Paramount: In a small home, every single purchase, every furniture placement, and every decor choice must be deliberate and serve a purpose. It’s a philosophy of quality over quantity, where form and function merge seamlessly.
  • Multi-functional Furniture is a Game-Changer: Pieces that cleverly serve dual (or even triple!) purposes, such as Nusaiba’s ingenious storage ottoman or versatile sofa bed, are indispensable for maximizing utility and adapting to various needs within limited square footage.
  • Never Shy Away from Personality: As Nusaiba so beautifully demonstrated, incorporating rich textures, carefully chosen colors, and meaningful accessories is vital for making a small space feel layered, inviting, and uniquely yours. It powerfully dispels the myth that minimalism is the sole path to small-space success.
  • Financial Freedom as a Powerful Motivator: The tangible ability to significantly reduce housing costs can unlock a world of other life experiences, financial goals, and personal pursuits. Small living, therefore, becomes not just a design choice, but a strategic lifestyle decision for many.
  • Adaptability is Your Superpower: Small homes inherently demand spaces that are flexible and capable of evolving with your needs. Whether it’s an attic transforming into a gym, office, and guest room, or a kitchen demanding creative storage hacks, embracing adaptability is key to a dynamic and functional home.

We sincerely hope that Nusaiba’s story has ignited a spark of inspiration within you, whether you’re comfortably settled in a cozy apartment, contemplating a downsize, or simply seeking clever and stylish design ideas. Her remarkable ability to craft such a stylish, functional, and deeply personal home in the vibrant heart of NYC is a powerful testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design and a positive, creative mindset.
