Hello everyone and a very Happy Friday to you! As December unfolds, the magic of the holiday season truly begins to twinkle, and our homes transform into cozy havens. It’s that wonderful time of year for decking the halls, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to share a glimpse into our bungalow, all dressed up for Christmas. Over the next week, I’ll be unveiling various spaces, starting today with our beloved living room. This festive reveal is proudly part of Lindsay of The White Buffalo Styling Company’s renowned Blogger Stylin Home Tours Series. Each season, Lindsay curates an exceptional group of bloggers to showcase their beautifully styled interiors, and this Christmas’s tours have been absolutely captivating. I am genuinely delighted and honored to have been invited to participate once again, connecting with such a vibrant and inspiring community of home decor enthusiasts.
If you’re making your way over from the delightful Dimples and Tangles, a warm and heartfelt welcome! Jennifer, the creative force behind it all, is someone I adore, and I’ve even had the pleasure of meeting her in person. She is truly the sweetest soul, and her home consistently radiates beauty and charm, regardless of the season. Her unique style always offers fresh inspiration, and I highly recommend exploring her work. For those of you who are new here, a cheerful hello! My name is Shavonda, and I’m so glad you’ve stopped by to peek at how we celebrate the holidays here in our humble little boho bungalow. We believe in creating a space that feels authentically ‘us’ while embracing the festive spirit, and I can’t wait to walk you through our approach to simple, natural holiday elegance.
Now, I must confess, I’m not the type of person who starts counting down the days to decorate for Christmas right after Halloween. While I absolutely adore this season and wholeheartedly agree it’s the most wonderful time of the year, our family usually holds off on full-scale decorating until much closer to Christmas Day. In fact, you won’t find our Christmas tree up just yet! We cherish the tradition of picking out a fresh, live tree every year, typically just a few days before Christmas, allowing us to enjoy its natural beauty and incredible, invigorating scent throughout the New Year. There’s something truly magical about bringing that living evergreen into our home just before the main event. However, this doesn’t mean our home isn’t already beginning to hum with touches of seasonal cheer. I love infusing subtle hints of holiday joy, gradually building up the festive atmosphere in our home with carefully chosen, understated elements.
Many of you who follow my journey in interiors, decorating, and design know that my personal style is best described as eclectic, with a strong lean towards bohemian influences, making me a self-proclaimed maximalist. I revel in filling my rooms with ‘all the things’ – layers upon layers of texture, a vibrant palette of colors, intricate patterns, and unique finds that tell a story. One might naturally assume that this maximalist philosophy extends to my holiday decorating, right? Surprisingly, quite the opposite is true. When it comes to the festive season, I tend to adopt a rather minimalistic approach. My goal is to create a serene and fresh ambiance that complements the existing character of our home, rather than overwhelming it. Living here in sunny California, we rarely experience the magic of a white winter, so my holiday decorating strategy focuses on evoking that crisp, snowy, winter wonderland feeling by bringing an abundance of fresh evergreens into our home. This includes our chosen live tree, which becomes the natural, fragrant centerpiece of this organic tableau. The added bonus? Their absolutely incredible, invigorating aroma that fills every corner of the house, instantly transporting you to a winter forest!
Our holiday decor is a heartfelt celebration of nature’s inherent beauty and profound simplicity. You’ll discover the elegant charm of fresh boxwood wreaths, the lush, flowing drape of cypress and cedar garland gracefully adorning architectural features, the vibrant, unexpected pop of rich green holly, and the classic, welcoming charm of fir branches thoughtfully arranged throughout our home during this truly special time. These natural elements form the very backbone of our seasonal aesthetic, providing an unparalleled depth, rich texture, and an organic freshness that simply cannot be replicated by artificial decorations. The subtle variations in their greens and the diverse textures they bring create a dynamic visual interest that is both calming and captivating. And of course, because it IS Christmastime after all – a season synonymous with wonder and light – we judiciously sprinkle in just a tad bit of sparkle. This isn’t an overwhelming explosion of glitter, but rather carefully placed, subtle glints that catch the ambient light, adding that essential festive magic without ever detracting from the inherent beauty of the natural elements. Think delicate mercury glass votives, tiny, almost imperceptible fairy lights nestled deep within the abundant greenery, or perhaps a few understated metallic ornaments with a muted sheen. This harmonious blend of rustic, organic elements and refined, gentle festive shimmer profoundly defines our little boho holiday living room. It’s a space meticulously designed to invite profound relaxation, quiet reflection, and pure, unadulterated joy, all while embracing the distinctive, free-spirited character of our beloved bungalow. Come on in, let the natural scents enchant you, and let’s explore every thoughtful detail together!
Our mantelpiece stands as a key focal point in the living room, a natural stage for our holiday expression. For this festive season, I’ve lovingly adorned it with my absolute favorite combination: an abundance of lush fresh greens gracefully spilling over the edge, intricately paired with a cluster of candle-filled vases. The soft, ethereal flickering glow of the candles, nestled amongst the vibrant, fragrant greenery, creates an incredibly inviting and tranquil ambiance – it’s the perfect setting for cozy evenings spent with loved ones. Complementing this organic display is a simple yet utterly charming felt ball garland, a lovely and thoughtful gift I received from Minted. Its soft, playful texture and subtly muted colors add a delightful touch of whimsy without ever overpowering the inherent elegance of the evergreens. Speaking of garlands, I must share a fantastic, budget-friendly find: the holiday garland from Costco. At just $15.99, it offers an incredible amount of high-quality greenery, making it a true seasonal favorite for me year after year. I was actually able to use just one generous strand to beautifully decorate both the entire length of the mantel and the large window in our living room, with plenty of extra to spare for other small festive touches around the house. It’s an excellent, versatile option for achieving a rich, natural, and bountiful look without breaking the bank.
Even though we don’t get to experience a white Christmas here in sunny California, the evenings certainly bring a delightful, crisp chill to the air. This makes gathering around a warm, crackling fire an absolute joy and a cherished family tradition. To truly embrace this seasonal pleasure, I love creating a dedicated cozy spot right by the fireplace. It’s a space meticulously designed for ultimate relaxation and intimate moments, where we can soak in the radiating warmth of the fire, enjoy the subtle, comforting woody scent of burning logs, and sip on rich, steaming hot cocoa. Imagine soft, inviting throws draped artfully over a comfortable armchair, plush pillows inviting you to sink in and unwind, and a small, antique side table thoughtfully holding your favorite festive mug. This little nook becomes our personal retreat, a tranquil sanctuary from the occasional holiday hustle and bustle, where we can reconnect, share stories, and simply bask in the serene beauty and quiet contemplation of the season. It’s about crafting a holistic sensory experience, not merely decorating a physical space.
Beyond the larger, more prominent statements like the mantel and window garlands, fresh greens and delicate bits of sparkle elegantly weave their way around the entire room, adorning tabletops and creating charming, intimate small vignettes. These subtle, carefully placed touches are where the true magic and personality truly lie in minimalist holiday decorating. On our coffee table, for instance, you might discover a simple yet striking grouping of fragrant pine sprigs artfully arranged in a vintage glass vase, perhaps with a few miniature mercury glass ornaments catching the ambient light and adding a gentle shimmer. Our side tables often feature small, vibrant potted succulents gracefully surrounded by a scattering of tiny, warm white fairy lights, creating a soft, almost ethereal glow that beckons you closer. Even unexpected spots, like thoughtfully styled bookshelves or the tops of antique cabinets, become miniature canvases for these fleeting moments of festive beauty. A single, glossy sprig of holly tucked into a vase alongside everyday items, or a small, verdant boxwood cutting gently laid next to a stack of beloved books, instantly adds an organic touch of seasonal charm. The key to this successful approach is to integrate these elements seamlessly and harmoniously with existing decor, enhancing rather than overwhelming the space. This subtle integration allows the diverse natural textures and elegant forms of the greenery to truly shine, while the occasional, understated sparkle provides that essential holiday twinkle without ever feeling overly commercial, gaudy, or cluttered. It’s about cultivating an atmosphere of understated elegance, profound natural warmth, and quiet sophistication, inviting contemplation and a sense of calm amidst a typically busy and bustling time of year.
I truly believe that by consistently maintaining a steadfast focus on simplicity and drawing profound inspiration directly from nature’s abundant elements, we can effortlessly create a holiday space that makes a truly profound and lasting impact. It’s not about overwhelming the senses with elaborate, complicated, or overly commercial displays, but rather about thoughtfully crafting an atmosphere that feels inherently authentic, deeply peaceful, and profoundly inviting. The subtle, varied textures, the organic, fluid shapes, and the refreshing, invigorating scents of nature itself collaboratively offer a unique kind of festive beauty that resonates deeply within the soul. This mindful approach ensures that our beloved boho bungalow not only remains effortlessly true to its distinctive identity but also gracefully embraces the joyous, reflective spirit of the holidays with an unparalleled sense of calm and elegance. It’s about celebrating the essence of the season with heartfelt intention and natural grace.
I sincerely hope you’ve thoroughly enjoyed this little tour of our living space and perhaps found some fresh inspiration for your own holiday decorating endeavors.
