SG’s Torrance Journey: Uncovering California’s Coastal Charms

Happy Friday, fellow adventurers! As winter firmly grips many parts of the world, my thoughts, much like yours perhaps, drift towards sun-kissed shores and the vibrant hues of tropical paradises. With a few more chilly, damp months stretching ahead, I find myself immersed in daydreams, exploring exotic locales through the lens of travel shows and inspiring Instagram feeds, all while meticulously planning my summer garden amidst stacks of seed catalogs.

My partner, Naomi, and I share a cherished tradition: a yearly getaway. Whether it’s an ambitious journey to a far-flung destination or a tranquil escape closer to home, these trips are essential for recharging our spirits. Just before the bustling holiday season, we embarked on a delightful excursion to Southern California, eager to discover a town neither of us had previously explored: Torrance. Despite Naomi’s upbringing in SoCal and our frequent visits to family in the region, Torrance offered a refreshing blend of familiarity and novelty. This charming coastal city, nestled within the expansive Los Angeles metropolitan area, boasts an enviable location approximately 10 miles south of LAX and a mere 17 miles north of Long Beach Airport. For those who, like me, prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of LAX, Torrance presents an exceptionally convenient and stress-free alternative for air travel.

What truly surprised and captivated me about Torrance was its unexpected natural beauty. Contrary to common perceptions of the concrete jungle that is Los Angeles, Torrance is remarkably verdant and picturesque. The city is a treasure trove of splendid parks, including a thriving marsh nature preserve, a breathtaking botanical garden (which quickly became one of my absolute favorite highlights of our trip), and a magnificent stretch of coastline. Experiencing such rich natural landscapes right within a major metropolitan area was an absolute delight. Over the course of two wonderful days, Naomi and I immersed ourselves in exploring this vibrant community. Here’s a detailed account of our unforgettable Torrance adventure:

Where We Stayed: Bluestem Hotel Torrance

Elegant exterior of Bluestem Hotel in Torrance, California, with modern architecture and lush landscaping under a sunny sky.

Our accommodations were at the exquisite Bluestem Hotel, Torrance’s newest boutique gem. Strategically located, the Bluestem offers unparalleled access to virtually everything the city has to offer. Its prime position meant effortless navigation in and out of the area, placing us less than a five-minute drive from a diverse array of shopping centers, delectable eateries, and captivating local attractions. The hotel itself is a masterclass in modern design, but it was the striking mural, a vibrant masterpiece crafted by a talented local artist, that truly left a lasting impression, adding a unique touch of community spirit and artistic flair to the lobby.

Our room at the Bluestem was a sanctuary of comfort and style. Thoughtfully designed with a keen eye for aesthetics, it provided a serene retreat after days filled with exploration. The highlight was undoubtedly our private balcony, an idyllic spot perfect for savoring both the glorious Southern California sunrises and the spectacular sunsets painting the sky in fiery hues. Beyond its scenic views, the balcony also overlooked the hotel’s stunning outdoor lounge area, a feature that quickly became my absolute favorite aspect of the entire property. This outdoor haven exuded an air of sophisticated chic, designed as an inviting space for relaxation and socializing. With its sleek, modern lounge furniture, cozy fire pits that promised warmth on cooler evenings, an abundance of artfully arranged hanging plants that brought a touch of nature indoors, and expansive French doors that seamlessly connected to the elegant interior lobby, the Bluestem Hotel truly redefined the boutique hotel experience. It was more than just a place to sleep; it was an extension of our Torrance adventure, providing comfort, luxury, and a beautiful backdrop for our stay.

What We Did in Torrance: Exploring the City’s Charms

South Coast Botanic Garden: A Verdant Oasis

Pathway winding through the lush South Coast Botanic Garden.

It’s no secret that if there’s an expansive green space, a meticulously curated botanical garden, or virtually anything related to the plant kingdom within a reasonable distance, you can bet I’ll be there! My excitement to explore the South Coast Botanic Garden was immense, and I’m thrilled to report that it surpassed all expectations. This sprawling wonderland proved to be both massive in scale and utterly delightful in its beauty. Even during our visit in November, a time when many seasonal blooms had receded, the garden remained an absolute highlight of our trip, radiating a profound sense of tranquility and natural splendor. Every turn revealed a new marvel, from arid desert landscapes to lush tropical collections, and serene Japanese gardens. The sheer diversity of plant life, thoughtfully arranged pathways, and educational exhibits made for an enriching experience, demonstrating the garden’s commitment to botanical preservation and education.

I even documented our enchanting visit to the botanic garden in a vlog, which you can still find uploaded on my IGTV channel if you’re curious to see more. Be prepared for a fair amount of walking – the garden’s vastness invites extensive exploration. Therefore, if you’re planning a visit (which, I cannot stress enough, I HIGHLY recommend!), ensure you’re equipped with comfortable walking shoes, breathable clothing to navigate the Southern California sunshine, and adequate sun protection. Naomi, ever the nature enthusiast, found her particular joy in the outdoor excursion lay in getting intimately acquainted with the magnificent trees, their towering presence and intricate forms offering a unique connection to the natural world. The South Coast Botanic Garden truly stands as a testament to Torrance’s surprising commitment to green spaces, offering an unparalleled escape into nature’s embrace.

Torrance Beach & The Iconic Torrance High School

Among the top recommendations we received for activities in Torrance were two distinct yet equally compelling destinations: a visit to the city’s beautiful beach and an exploration of the historic Torrance High School. Now, I must confess, I wouldn’t typically describe myself as a ‘beach person.’ Let me clarify: I absolutely adore the aesthetic and atmosphere of the beach, but my idea of enjoyment doesn’t usually involve hours spent simply lounging on the sand. I appreciate the proximity of the ocean and the option to access it, but my true inclination is to delve into the heart of a town or city, soaking in its culture and unique character. That said, I do find immense pleasure in the rhythmic sound of crashing waves and the meditative act of strolling along the shore, collecting seashells – but that’s generally the extent of my beach-going fervor. My biggest deterrent is crowds, and overcrowded beaches, to me, are the absolute worst. This is precisely why I was SO incredibly delighted to discover that Torrance Beach remains something of a well-kept secret. (And yes, I realize I might be slightly “ruining” it by sharing this, my apologies!).

Stretching approximately a mile and a half, this pristine stretch of sand is gracefully tucked between the more bustling Redondo Beach and the picturesque Malaga Cove, all within the expansive Santa Monica Bay. What struck us immediately was the profound sense of privacy and tranquility; it truly felt as though we had a secluded beach all to ourselves. Torrance Beach has earned its reputation as the “crowd-less” South Bay beach, and for excellent reason. The experience was wonderfully serene and deeply relaxing, offering a peaceful respite from the typical Southern California beach scene. Moreover, its convenient location meant that a delightful stroll of just a couple of blocks brought us to an array of charming shops and inviting restaurants, making it easy to transition from seaside serenity to urban exploration. We are unequivocally looking forward to revisiting this hidden coastal gem on our next trip.

Now, for anyone who, like me, came of age in the vibrant era of the 1990s, you’ll understand that television shows like Beverly Hills, 90210 and Buffy The Vampire Slayer weren’t just entertainment; they were cultural touchstones, practically defining our youth! So, naturally, a pilgrimage to Torrance High School was an absolute must. I simply HAD to make a quick stop to behold the iconic exterior of one of the most recognizable locations from some of my all-time favorite shows growing up. The anticipation was palpable, and the reality did not disappoint.

Historic architecture of Torrance High School, a famous filming location.

In person, Torrance High School is even more striking than it appears on screen. Its stunning architecture, a beautiful blend of Spanish Colonial Revival and Romanesque elements, is truly remarkable and exudes a timeless grandeur. The school’s elegant arches, intricate detailing, and mature landscaping create a truly picturesque setting that perfectly captures the quintessential American high school aesthetic. It’s no wonder that Torrance as a whole has garnered a reputation as a favored backdrop for the entertainment industry, having served as a filming location for hundreds of productions, ranging from beloved TV shows and blockbuster movies to dynamic music videos. This cinematic history adds another fascinating layer to the city’s already rich character, making it a truly lovely and uniquely charming place to explore. The sense of nostalgia combined with the architectural beauty made this a memorable stop on our Torrance itinerary.

Del Amo Fashion Center & The Delightful Torrance Bakery

Beyond its natural beauty and cinematic history, Torrance also offers impressive options for shopping and culinary delights. We made sure to visit a couple of other local mainstays that contribute significantly to the city’s appeal. Our retail therapy destination was the renowned Del Amo Fashion Center. Prepare to be amazed, as this colossal establishment is recognized as the third-largest shopping mall in the entire United States! Its sheer size is staggering, encompassing a dizzying array of stores, from high-end boutiques to popular department stores, along with a vast selection of dining options and entertainment venues. Navigating its sprawling corridors felt like an adventure in itself, showcasing the incredible scale of modern retail. Whether you’re in search of the latest fashion trends, unique gifts, or simply an engaging indoor activity, Del Amo Fashion Center provides an experience that is both extensive and exhilarating.

No trip, especially one that involves exploration and discovery, would be complete without indulging in local culinary treats. We certainly couldn’t depart Torrance without a visit to the beloved Torrance Bakery. This local institution is celebrated for its delectable baked goods and a charming, bustling atmosphere that speaks to decades of community presence. While, regrettably, there weren’t any suitable vegan options for Naomi to enjoy on this particular visit, the bakery’s reputation for excellence is well-deserved. I can personally attest to the absolute deliciousness of their croissants – flaky, buttery, and perfectly golden, they are a true delight that epitomizes the art of French patisserie. The aroma of freshly baked bread and sweet pastries filled the air, creating an irresistible invitation to sample their extensive offerings. Torrance Bakery is more than just a place to grab a treat; it’s a testament to local craftsmanship and a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth exploring the city.

Discover Torrance: A Hidden Gem Near Los Angeles

Reflecting on our two-day escapade, Naomi and I wholeheartedly agreed that our time in Torrance was truly enjoyable and remarkably fulfilling. We discovered a city that seamlessly blends urban convenience with surprising natural beauty and a laid-back coastal vibe, making it an ideal destination for various types of travelers. While we managed to pack a great deal into our visit, there remain a few enticing attractions and local spots that we didn’t have the chance to explore this time around, leaving us eager and excited for a future return.
