SG Travels: Discover Downtown Napa

Hello fellow travelers and design enthusiasts!

For those who followed my journey on social media, you’ll know that the One Room Challenge (ORC) was an incredibly intense period for me. It left me completely exhausted, and once it was finally over, all I craved was a complete change of scenery and a moment to recharge. Thankfully, the perfect opportunity presented itself in the form of a delightful staycation, and I couldn’t pack my bags fast enough!

My daughter, Naomi, and I hopped into the car and embarked on a short, scenic drive west to the world-renowned Napa Valley. It was precisely what we needed to unwind and reconnect. Surprisingly, despite its close proximity – less than an hour and a half from our home – neither of us had ever properly explored Napa before. What a delightful discovery it turned out to be!

Beyond the Vineyards: Discovering the Heart of Downtown Napa

When you hear “Napa Valley,” the immediate images that spring to mind are often sprawling vineyards, majestic estate wineries, and perhaps hot air balloons gracefully drifting over rolling hills. While these iconic experiences are undoubtedly a huge draw, Naomi and I had the privilege of experiencing a truly unique and different side of this famous region: the vibrant and welcoming downtown Napa. Our time there was nothing short of lovely, offering a blend of culinary delights, cultural immersion, and relaxed exploration.

*Before I dive deeper into our adventure, I want to preface this by acknowledging the challenging circumstances during our visit. We traveled to Napa during a very difficult time for not only the city itself but for the entire Northern California region. The devastating Camp Fire was still actively burning, resulting in noticeably low air quality. This was certainly not the typical pristine atmosphere one would usually experience during a visit to Napa.

Additionally, we arrived at the exact same time as one of the victims of the tragic mass shooting in Thousand Oaks was being brought home for burial. She was a Napa native, and the town had gathered for miles, lining the streets in a profound display of respect and mourning as her body returned to be laid to rest. Both of these significant events contributed to an overall vibe in the city that was far more reserved and quiet than usual. Despite these somber undertones, Naomi and I were determined to make the absolute best of our time together, and we genuinely had a wonderful, memorable trip.*

A Luxurious Retreat: Our Stay at the Napa River Inn

One of the absolute highlights of our downtown Napa experience was our stay at the exquisite Napa River Inn. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance and comfort. It wasn’t surprising, given its prestigious four-star Forbes rating, that every detail, from the tasteful decor to the attentive service, spoke of luxury and quality. The hotel truly exceeded our expectations, providing the perfect sanctuary after our busy days of exploration.

Historic Charm and Modern Comfort

The Napa River Inn holds a prime location on the historic Napa Mill site, nestled charmingly along the riverfront. This picturesque setting also houses other delightful establishments, including restaurants and a general store, creating a self-contained little village feel. Many of the Inn’s rooms boast breathtaking river views, offering a serene backdrop to your stay. Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of the river and enjoying your morning coffee while gazing at the tranquil waters – pure bliss!

As guests of the hotel, we were treated to a truly special amenity: complimentary room service every morning, featuring an array of incredible pastries from the renowned Sweetie Pies Bakery and cafe. There’s honestly nothing quite like waking up to the aroma of freshly baked goods, complemented by freshly squeezed fruit juice and piping hot coffee, all delivered right to your door. They even thoughtfully offered delicious vegan options, which Naomi thoroughly enjoyed. We loved the food so much that we decided to have lunch there on our last day as well, savoring every bite.

I would wholeheartedly recommend a stay at the Napa River Inn if you’re planning a trip to Napa. It offers an unparalleled blend of history, luxury, and convenience. One regret I have is not getting the chance to experience their world-class spa. It boasts a reputation for rejuvenating treatments and could have been the ultimate relaxation after the ORC. Perhaps next time, a visit to their spa will be at the top of my list!

A Cultural Interlude: The Napa Valley Film Festival

Another fantastic aspect of our trip was that it coincided with the annual Napa Valley Film Festival! This added an unexpected layer of cultural richness to our stay, allowing us to experience Napa not just as a culinary and wine destination, but also as a vibrant hub for arts and cinema. The festival is a celebrated event that attracts filmmakers and film lovers alike, transforming the valley into a dynamic cinematic landscape.

During the festival, both downtown Napa and many of the charming neighboring towns played host to various film screenings and events. We decided to venture out to Helena, a picturesque town nearby, to catch a screening of A Private War. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, a wonderful contrast to the earlier somber mood, and it felt special to be part of such a well-regarded cinematic event.

The movie itself was incredibly powerful and thought-provoking, telling a poignant story that resonated deeply with us. Coincidentally, we watched it on Veteran’s Day, which made the experience even more impactful and reflective. It was a perfect blend of entertainment and meaningful introspection, truly enriching our Napa Valley experience.

Culinary Delights and Boutique Finds: Exploring Downtown Napa on Foot

One of the aspects we most adored about downtown Napa is its incredible walkability. The charming streets are lined with an inviting mix of local shops, art galleries, and diverse restaurants, making it a joy to explore on foot. Naomi and I spent hours leisurely perusing the boutiques, discovering unique treasures, and soaking in the friendly, relaxed atmosphere that defines this part of Napa. Every corner seemed to hold a new discovery, from artisan crafts to stylish apparel.

As committed seekers of delicious plant-based options, we are always on the hunt for restaurants that offer a good variety of vegan menu items. Downtown Napa did not disappoint! For dinner one evening, we enjoyed a fantastic meal at Mango On Main, where the flavors were vibrant and the ambiance was lively. Their menu offered creative and satisfying vegan dishes that left us wanting more. For lunch, we took a pleasant stroll over to Grace’s Table. This charming spot presented a delightful array of international dishes, and I can confidently say that their chilaquiles were absolutely divine – a perfect blend of savory and spicy. If you ever find yourself in downtown Napa, you simply must try them!

A Different Kind of Sip: Downtown Napa Wine Tasting

Of course, no trip to Napa, even one focused on downtown, would be complete without some wine tasting. However, downtown Napa offers a truly unique and special tasting experience that differs significantly from the traditional estate winery visits out in the valley. Here, you’ll discover a treasure trove of exclusive boutique wines, many of which you can only find within the downtown area. What makes this experience even better is that all these tasting rooms are conveniently located within walking distance of one another, making it incredibly easy to hop from one discovery to the next without the need for a designated driver or extensive travel between venues.

A fantastic and highly recommended way to fully embrace the downtown wine tasting scene is by utilizing a tasting card. This card offers exceptional value, granting you access to exclusive savings and special products at various participating tasting rooms. It’s an intelligent and cost-effective way to sample a wide array of exquisite wines and delve into the nuanced world of Napa’s boutique producers.

A Memorable Visit to Brown Estate Downtown

Naomi and I had heard wonderful things about Brown Estate, a Black-owned winery with a rich history and a reputation for exceptional wines. We made sure to prioritize a stop at their new Brown Downtown tasting room, and it absolutely did not disappoint. From the moment we entered, we were struck by the elegant yet inviting ambiance – a perfect blend of sophistication and warmth.

The staff at Brown Estate were amazing – knowledgeable, passionate, and incredibly welcoming. They guided us through a delightful tasting, sharing insights into their winemaking philosophy and the distinct characteristics of each varietal. We even had the incredible opportunity to meet and chat with one of the owners, learning more about the fascinating history of the company and its deep, meaningful connection to the Napa community. The wines themselves were simply delicious, each sip telling a story of craftsmanship and terroir. We were so impressed that we are already looking forward to our next visit, and we would absolutely love to make it out to their beautiful estate vineyard as well, to see where the magic truly begins.

Refreshed and Recharged: A Perfect Napa Getaway

Our quick trip to Napa was exactly what I needed after the demanding weeks of our labor-intensive remodel. It was incredibly refreshing and provided the perfect escape, allowing me to fully unwind and spend quality time with Naomi. We had an absolutely wonderful time exploring the unique charms of downtown Napa, from its historic architecture and boutique shops to its diverse culinary scene and unparalleled wine tasting experiences.

The convenience of Napa being so close to us in Sacramento is a huge bonus, meaning that we can easily plan another visit soon. Creating these special memories together through travel is one of my absolute favorite things to do. It’s truly fun and fulfilling when we can embark on such delightful adventures so close to home, discovering new facets of our beautiful Northern California region. Downtown Napa proved to be a versatile and accessible destination, perfect for a luxurious weekend getaway or even a quick day trip.

Until next time, happy travels!
