Greetings, fellow garden enthusiasts and design lovers!
Today, I’m absolutely brimming with excitement to share an ambitious project that has been cultivating in my mind for years: the creation of our very own garden. While it currently exists only in dreams and detailed sketches, the vision for this space is vibrant and clear. If you’ve been following my journey on Instagram, you might recall my recent deep dive into the enchanting world of potager gardens in my stories. This particular style of gardening captured my imagination about eight years ago, sparking an obsession that has only grown stronger with time. In fact, I’ve even touched upon this topic before right here on the blog, back when we first decided to sell our previous home and embrace a new chapter in a smaller space. One of the primary reasons I was so resolute about finding a property with a generous yard during our house hunt was the fervent desire to have ample room to design and cultivate a potager garden of my own. Now, after three wonderful years settling into our bungalow, the time has finally arrived to transform this long-held dream into a tangible reality.
What Exactly is a Potager Garden? Unveiling a French Masterpiece
For those unfamiliar with the term, “potager” is a beautiful French word that translates to an ornamental vegetable or kitchen garden. But it’s so much more than just a place to grow food. A potager is a harmonious blend of beauty and utility, where the primary goal is to make the function of providing sustenance an aesthetically pleasing experience. Unlike a traditional, purely utilitarian vegetable patch, potager gardens are meticulously designed with an emphasis on visual appeal. Often, vibrant flowers and fragrant herbs are interwoven with vegetables, not just for their practical benefits like pest deterrence or attracting pollinators, but specifically to enhance the garden’s overall splendor and charm.
These artistic gardens can range from highly intricate and formally structured designs, complete with geometric beds and defined pathways, to more relaxed and casual arrangements that still prioritize beauty. Regardless of their style, they are always created with the intention of being highly functional, producing an abundance of fresh, healthy food. What truly sets them apart are their carefully considered pathways, often graveled or paved, and thoughtfully arranged rows or beds, which invite visitors to stroll and admire the bounty. It’s a testament to French elegance, finding a way to infuse artistry and grace into every aspect of daily life, even something as fundamental as growing food. Imagine stepping into a space where every plant, every pathway, every element contributes to a cohesive and inspiring landscape, a true feast for both the eyes and the palate. This fusion of agriculture and art elevates gardening to an experience that nourishes the soul as much as the body, making the potager a truly unique and desirable addition to any home.

Cultivating Inspiration: A Global Tapestry of Garden Styles
After three years of dreaming and meticulous planning in our bungalow, I am finally ready to break ground and begin the exhilarating process of building this garden. I wanted to share some of the initial thoughts and inspirations guiding my design. Much like the eclectic and globally-inspired aesthetic you find within our home, my garden will be a vibrant tapestry woven with diverse cultural elements. My inherent bohemian spirit simply won’t allow for an ordinary, run-of-the-mill kitchen garden. Instead, I’m predominantly drawing inspiration from the breathtaking gardens of France, the exotic landscapes of Morocco, and the sun-drenched beauty of the Mediterranean.
This eclectic blend means you can expect to see a fascinating mix of details. Picture the striking cobalt blues reminiscent of both the Mediterranean coastline and the intricate tilework of Morocco, creating stunning visual accents. Imagine the delicate beauty of lavender fields, soft florals, and the artful forms of espalier fruit trees, all echoing the timeless elegance of French gardens. To embrace our climate, I’m planning to incorporate heat-tolerant succulents like agave and various cacti, adding a touch of rugged beauty. Ornate lanterns will cast a warm glow in the evenings, potted trees will provide structure and height, and I’m even hoping to cleverly integrate patterned tiles, perhaps as stepping stones or accents, to infuse a unique artisanal touch.
Beyond aesthetics, this garden is designed with culinary adventures in mind. Naomi and I share a passion for cooking a wide array of ethnic dishes, so I’m committed to growing a diverse selection of fruits, vegetables, and herbs – the very ingredients you might discover in the bustling souks of Marrakech or the vibrant medinas of the Mediterranean. We are incredibly fortunate to live in a climate that supports such a rich variety of plant life, and I intend to take full advantage of this blessing. This garden will not just be a space for growing; it will be a living larder, a sensory experience, and a constant source of inspiration, reflecting our travels and our love for global flavors right here in our backyard.

Strategic Siting: The Foundation of a Thriving Garden
Over the past three years, I’ve had the invaluable opportunity to truly understand the lay of our land. This extended observation period, spanning all four seasons, has been absolutely crucial in determining the ideal location for the potager. I’ve carefully noted where the yard receives the most abundant sunlight throughout the day, where the terrain is naturally most level, and where rainwater tends to pool. This deep understanding of our microclimate and topography has empowered me to pinpoint the absolute best possible spot for the garden, ensuring it has every chance to thrive and produce bountiful harvests.
After much consideration, we’ve decided to situate the garden off to the side, cleverly tucked behind the garage. This dedicated space will run the entire length of the fence and extend outwards from the fence to the width where the garage ends. This placement isn’t merely convenient; it’s strategically perfect for several compelling reasons, which I’ve outlined below. Thoughtful site selection is perhaps the most critical first step in any successful gardening endeavor, and I’m confident that this chosen location will provide the optimal conditions for our diverse collection of plants to flourish, fulfilling both their practical and ornamental purposes.

This area is an exceptional choice for our potager garden for several key reasons:
The sheer scale of this dedicated space is impressive; it measures approximately 60 feet long by 24 feet wide, encompassing just under 1400 square feet. To put that into perspective, this garden plot is technically larger than our actual house! This generous footprint provides ample room to incorporate all the diverse elements of my global-inspired design, from espalier fruit trees and patterned tile accents to dedicated beds for a wide array of ethnic fruits, vegetables, and herbs, all while maintaining aesthetic pathways and open areas for enjoyment.
The Journey Ahead: Phased Development and First-Year Goals
I’ve been diligently sketching out a comprehensive design plan for the layout, and I promise to share all the intricate details in my next garden update post once I finalize some of the finer points. There is undoubtedly a significant amount of work ahead of us, beginning with the fundamental tasks of thoroughly clearing out the designated space and carefully relocating our existing shed to make way for the potager’s foundation. It’s important to acknowledge that, much like the extensive renovation process we undertook inside our home, the creation of this garden will not be an overnight transformation. This is a journey, a phased development that requires patience, thoughtful execution, and an appreciation for the unfolding process.
For this inaugural year, my primary goals are focused on establishing the core infrastructure. The most critical objective is to get the foundational elements of the design firmly in place. This includes defining the main pathways, outlining the primary growing beds, and perhaps installing any permanent structural features that will shape the garden’s character. Beyond this foundational work, I am genuinely hopeful that we will be able to get a few key plants into the ground. My particular focus for initial planting will be the fruit trees. They represent a long-term investment in the garden’s future, as it will take a couple of seasons, if not more, for them to mature and begin producing their sweet bounty. Planting them early ensures we start that clock ticking now.
Admittedly, as with any large-scale creative project, I find myself navigating a mix of emotions. There’s a definite sense of nervousness about embarking on such a substantial undertaking, and at times, I feel a tad overwhelmed by the sheer scope of what needs to be done. However, these feelings are profoundly overshadowed by an immense wave of excitement and anticipation. The vision of this vibrant, productive, and aesthetically captivating potager garden fills me with an incredible eagerness to roll up my sleeves and get started. This isn’t just about growing food; it’s about cultivating a dream, shaping a landscape, and creating a space that brings immense joy and connection to nature. I can’t wait to share every step of this exciting adventure with all of you.
Until next time, friends…
