Welcome to Our California Cottage: A Summer Home Tour!
Greetings, dear friends and fellow home enthusiasts! It’s an absolute delight to welcome you today as part of this incredible Summer Tour of Homes, a collaborative event meticulously curated by my wonderful blog friend, Marty, from A Stroll Thru Life. This week, Marty has gathered a vibrant community of 29 talented bloggers, each opening their doors to share their unique interpretations of summer living and how their spaces embrace the warmth and light of the season.
If you’re joining us directly from the inspiring abode of No Minimalist Here, I extend a particularly warm welcome! Weren’t Sherry’s creative touches and her courtyard absolutely breathtaking? And those striking lamps – truly a triumph in design that beautifully anchors her space! I’m thrilled you’ve made your way over to our little corner of the internet, and I can’t wait to give you a personalized glimpse into our cherished 1940s cottage bungalow, specially adorned for the sunny days ahead. Prepare to be inspired by our journey of downsized living and the vibrant summer spirit that permeates every room.
Embracing the Charm of Downsized Living in Our 1940s California Cottage
For those of you who are new here, hello and a heartfelt welcome to our home! My family and I currently reside in sunny California, navigating the delightful, albeit sometimes challenging, adventure of downsized living in our charming 1940s cottage bungalow. It’s a genuine fixer-upper, brimming with character and endless possibilities that truly speak to our creative spirits. We’re now just a couple of months shy of our one-year anniversary in this “new” old home, a significant transition after trading in our spacious, practically brand-new builder-grade house that boasted twice the square footage.
Our decision to embrace a smaller footprint has been incredibly rewarding, fostering a deeper connection to our surroundings and encouraging more intentional and mindful living. It’s taught us to appreciate quality over quantity, and to truly make every square foot count. Of course, it hasn’t been without its quirks. For instance, we now operate with just one bathroom, a stark contrast to the three we enjoyed previously! Imagine: two adults, a spirited tweenage girl, a lively seven-year-old boy, and occasional guests, all sharing a single bathroom. Let’s just say it makes for some memorable mornings and evenings, requiring a good deal of patience, planning, and a healthy dose of humor!
Adding to the cozy chaos, we also share our compact bungalow with our very large and lovable Great Dane puppy, whose majestic presence ensures life here is never dull and always full to the maximum. From his playful romps in the living room to his sprawling naps on the rug, he’s a beloved member of our bustling household, perfectly illustrating that even big dogs can thrive in smaller spaces with enough love and outdoor adventures. Despite the occasional squeeze, I wouldn’t have it any other way; this little home truly feels like us – authentic, a bit quirky, and overflowing with love.
As you can probably tell from the photos, our cottage is a major work in progress. We’re currently mid-project in nearly every room, and truthfully, I have no idea when we’ll ever see everything completely finished! But that’s part of the charm, isn’t it? It’s a living, evolving space that reflects our ongoing journey and our passion for creating a personalized sanctuary. Each brushstroke, every new textile, and every piece of collected furniture tells a story, making this house a true home, even with its ongoing transformations and charming imperfections. It’s a space that grows with us, adapting to our needs and reflecting our ever-evolving style.
Infusing Summer Joy: Our Decorating Philosophy
Summer is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite season. The long, bright days, the warm breezes, and the general sense of lightness and freedom inspire me deeply. There’s a particular kind of magic in the air that just begs for a refresh in our surroundings. While I wouldn’t necessarily categorize myself as a strict seasonal decorator who completely overhauls the house four times a year, I absolutely adore the opportunity to inject our spaces with fun, vibrant summer colors. It’s less about overt themes and more about enhancing the existing warmth and bringing in that joyful, relaxed summer feeling.
For me, it’s about subtle shifts – swapping out heavier textures for lighter, breathable fabrics, introducing playful pops of cheerful hues, and maximizing the incredible natural light that floods our home during these glorious months. It’s about creating an atmosphere that feels effortless, inviting, and perfectly aligned with the laid-back rhythm of summer. Come on in, let me show you around and illustrate how these simple changes make a world of difference!
Our Living Area: A Canvas for Colorful Textiles and Comfort
In our one and only living area, I’ve recently been having a great deal of fun making the absolute best out of what I affectionately call our “ugly couch situation.” It’s a large, beige beast of a sofa – incredibly comfortable and foundational for family movie nights, but not exactly a showstopper on its own. This is precisely where my self-proclaimed title of “hopeless textile hoarder” truly comes into play and shines! I absolutely love layering this big couch with colorful, patterned textiles that inject personality and warmth into the space.
In the spring, it was beautifully adorned with a cozy Kantha quilt, bringing in soft, inviting textures and muted, calming patterns. Now, for the summer, it’s all about the vibrant energy of a Serape blanket! Its rich, striped colors and dynamic pattern instantly transform the entire room’s aesthetic, making it feel fresh, lively, and perfectly suited for the season. This approach is not only economical but also an incredibly effective way to refresh a room without committing to new, permanent furniture. It allows for a dynamic and evolving decor that keeps pace with the seasons and my own creative impulses.
This textile-centric decorating strategy allows me to frequently change the mood of the room, adapting it to the season or simply my current whims. The textiles not only add much-needed color but also introduce a sense of global eclectic style, perfectly complementing the casual, collected feel of our cottage bungalow. It’s a testament to how smaller, thoughtful touches – like a carefully chosen throw or a stack of colorful pillows – can have a huge impact, especially in a compact living space where every element truly counts and contributes to the overall narrative of the home.
Our Productive Office Nook: Making Every Corner Count
Adjacent to our main living area, you’ll find our compact yet highly functional office nook. In a small home, maximizing every inch is crucial, and this space serves as a dedicated spot for creativity and productivity without feeling cramped or intrusive. It’s a testament to clever design that even a tiny corner can become a bustling hub for work or creative pursuits. I’m pretty sure those empty frames on the wall will get filled eventually – it’s all part of our “slow and steady” approach to decorating, allowing our home to evolve authentically and organically over time. This philosophy embraces the journey, not just the destination, creating a space that feels lived-in, genuinely reflective of our family’s personality, and constantly inspiring.
The Tranquil Porch: A Summer Sanctuary for Reflection
Moving outdoors, the porch is undeniably one of my absolute favorite places to be during the summer months. It truly transforms into a serene sanctuary where I love to start and end my day. There’s something incredibly restorative about sipping my morning coffee out here, listening to the birds awaken, and feeling the gentle California breeze on my skin. It’s a moment of quiet reflection before the day begins.
In the evenings, it becomes the perfect spot to unwind, perhaps with a good book, or simply enjoying the twilight with my family as the sun sets. We’ve adorned it with comfortable seating, a few potted plants that thrive in the summer sun, and some cozy textiles to enhance its inviting and laid-back atmosphere. It’s an effortless extension of our small indoor living space, offering a breath of fresh air and a vital connection to nature right outside our door. This little outdoor oasis proves that even a compact home can offer ample opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment, especially when you thoughtfully design and style your exterior spaces. It’s where many of our best summer memories are made, a true testament to the simple, yet profound, pleasures of home.
Our Serene Bedroom Retreat: A Sanctuary for Recharge
Finally, let’s step into our bedroom, designed to be a serene and restful retreat from the day’s activities. Even in a smaller home, it’s absolutely essential to create spaces that offer a profound sense of calm, privacy, and escape. Here, the summer touches are a bit more subtle, focusing on light, breathable linens, a fresh and soothing color palette, and natural elements that promote deep tranquility and relaxation. We aim for simplicity and comfort, ensuring that this room feels like a true sanctuary where we can fully recharge at the end of a busy day.
From the soft throws draped over the bed to the minimalist decor on the nightstands, every element is chosen with intention to contribute to a peaceful and uncluttered atmosphere. The abundant natural light filtering through the windows provides a gentle, soft wake-up call in the mornings, and the carefully selected plants, like a fiddle leaf fig, add a touch of living greenery, effortlessly bringing the refreshing outdoors in. It’s a space where we can truly unwind and rejuvenate, ready for whatever adventures our downsized, summer-filled life in the cottage bungalow brings. It exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a small room into a grand haven.
