Homemade beard oil made with carrier oils and essential oils will make your beard look and feel better than ever.

Making your own beard oil is as simple as mixing together a few oils. This blend will tame unruly hair and make styling much easier.

Our husband has been rocking a beard for quite some time now, and this beard oil is something that he uses daily on its own or with homemade beard butter.

He loves this stuff, and we love that we know exactly what’s in it. We also picked a couple of our favorite essential oils to add to it, so we love the smell!

If you have a beard or know someone who does, it would make a great gift that would quickly become part of their daily routine.

It’s one of the first things on our list of homemade gifts for him if you need a few more ideas.

Reasons to Love Homemade Beard Oil

Soft, groomed beard: Beard oil makes a world of difference in turning a frizzy, dry, unruly beard into a smooth, hydrated, well-groomed beard. It’s easy to use, and the results speak for themselves!

Natural ingredients: This beard oil is made using simple, all-natural ingredients, so you can feel great putting it on your face.

Save money: Beard oil can be surprisingly expensive, especially if you choose more natural brands. Making your own beard oil is an excellent way to save money!

What You’ll Need

Homemade beard oil ingredients.
  • Jojoba oil: Jojoba oil is a wonderful oil for hair because it strengthens and moisturizes. By hydrating hair follicles, jojoba oil is thought to prevent hair loss and promote growth.
  • Sweet almond oil: This oil has a slightly sweet and nutty aroma. It has a medium consistency and is known for its moisturizing properties.
  • Fractionated coconut oil: This oil is our favorite to use in skincare products because it is light yet moisturizing. FCO is different from regular coconut oil in that it remains liquid at cool temperatures.
  • Essential oils: We always use lemongrass and cedarwood for our husband because we both love the smell. Keep reading for other essential oil blends.
  • A dropper bottle: We purchase empty amber glass dropper bottles online and refill them as needed.

How to Make Beard Oil

Squirting carrier oil into a glass bottle with a small funnel.

Step 1: Combine all of the carrier oils in the dropper bottle. A small funnel works well for this.

Step 2: Add the essential oils. Secure the lid and shake well before using.

How to Use Beard Oil

Add 2-5 drops of oil to the palm of your hands. Massage into the beard, using a downward motion.

For long or thick beards, use a beard comb or brush to evenly distribute the oil throughout the whole beard. Make sure you clean your beard brush regularly!

Beard oil works best after showering on a clean, dry beard. For longer beards, use twice daily, once in the evening and once in the morning.

Best Essential Oils for Beard Oil

Adding essential oils to your DIY beard oil is a great way to scent it without using artificial fragrances. Plus, essential oils can help to promote hair growth and thicken the beard.

We stick to woodsy and earthy oils to keep the scent manly enough for our husband. The first time we made beard oil, we did a combination of lemongrass and cedarwood, and we never switched it up.

He did say it was the best-smelling beard oil he has ever had!

It is important to remember that some citrus oils are photosensitive oils and can cause skin sensitivity or burning if worn out in direct sunlight.

Lemongrass is steam distilled from the leaves of a grassy tropical plant, and though it has a citrus scent to it, it is not technically a citrus essential oil, nor is it classified as a photosensitive essential oil.

It is always best to perform a patch test with any new skincare or hair care product before using it. If you have a sensitivity to any oil, you will want to stop using it immediately.

Recipe FAQs

What is carrier oil?

A carrier oil, or base oil, is any vegetable-based oil that can be used to dilute essential oils. They are called carrier oils because they help “carry” the essential oil to the skin.

How often should we use beard oil?

For best results, it’s a good idea to use beard oil at least once a day. For beards that are long or very dry, twice a day use may be helpful.
