And indeed, our home has been a very slow, deliberate marathon of continuous improvement and thoughtful elevation. We’re now nearing completion on all the interior spaces, so let’s take a closer look at where we are. But first, let’s rewind and take a little trip down memory lane to see where it all began.

The Humble Beginnings: Our Living Room Before the Transformation

Let’s cast our minds back to the exact moment we first stepped into this space, the day we officially moved in. It’s hard to believe how much has changed!

She was, admittedly, a little rough around the edges, lacking in modern polish, but brimming with an almost overwhelming amount of untapped potential. From the moment I saw those original hardwood floors, the grand picture window that flooded the room with natural light, the substantial, fully functioning wood-burning fireplace, and the elegant French doors, I knew. I just knew that with a bit of dedicated work and our unique personal touch, this space could be absolutely extraordinary. It would transcend its dated appearance and become a truly special place. Since moving in, it has indeed undergone several distinct transformations, each version bringing us closer to our ideal. And I must say, I am absolutely enamored with how things look and feel right now.

Crafting Our Vision: Thoughtful Design Choices for a Small Space

Interestingly, we didn’t undertake any major structural changes in this particular room. Our focus was purely on enhancing its existing beauty and functionality through carefully considered aesthetic updates. We completely enveloped the space in rich, inky black paint, extending this bold choice even to the ceiling – a decision that has created an incredibly cozy and sophisticated cocoon-like atmosphere. The fireplace, a focal point, received a stunning refresh. We updated its facade and hearth with fresh paint and elegant marble tiles, instantly elevating its presence. An overhead light was introduced to provide essential ambient illumination, and we lovingly restored the original doorbell chimes, bringing back a piece of the home’s history. The original hardwood floors were refinished to reveal their natural warmth and character, grounding the entire space. One of the most impactful ways we’ve truly elevated our daily living experience in this space has been through the thoughtful integration of home automation. For added practicality, I opted for privacy lining, which provides just the right amount of gentle light filtering during the day when needed, and ensures complete privacy and comfort at night. The picture window itself was a significant selling point for us when we first bought this house, and I’m thrilled that the Serena smart shades truly help to keep the focus on the architectural beauty of the window and the abundant, beautiful natural light it brings into our home.
