Hello everyone and happy Friday!
Today marks a truly special moment as we stand on the brink of a significant family milestone. In just a couple of months, our lovely daughter will be celebrating her thirteenth birthday, officially ushering me into the exciting, and perhaps slightly terrifying, world of parenting a teenager. It feels like just yesterday she was a toddler, and now, here we are, navigating the complexities of adolescence. Time, as they say, truly flies when you’re raising incredible humans.
The Long-Overdue Transformation: A Teen Room Makeover Begins
For nearly a year since we moved into our cozy bungalow, the kids’ rooms haven’t received the dedicated attention they deserve. Our priority was to settle into the new home, understand its rhythms, and live in the spaces before committing to any major design decisions. While my daughter’s room did get a vibrant, fun-colored ceiling and an upgrade from a standard ceiling fan to our old dining room chandelier, that’s where the design journey paused. The walls remained untouched, the windows were temporarily covered with tacked-up sheets – yes, you read that right – and storage solutions were virtually nonexistent. To put it mildly, it’s been a “hot mess,” and the time for a complete overhaul is not just approaching, it’s critically overdue.
I typically hesitate to share too much of their personal spaces on social media or my blog. My philosophy has always been to respect their privacy and ensure their rooms remain true sanctuaries – places where they can unwind, express themselves, and truly feel at home. This is especially important for Bry, who values her personal space deeply. We want their rooms to be reflections of their personalities, not just another design project for the blog.
However, after thoughtful discussions, both my son and Bry have given their enthusiastic approval for me to share their upcoming room makeovers. Bry, in particular, is excited about the prospect of transforming her space, and she’s even agreed to let me document the journey. This collaboration means we can embark on this creative adventure together, making her room not just aesthetically pleasing but also a functional and inspiring haven tailored to her evolving needs as a teenager. To give you a clear picture of where we’re starting, here’s a peek at her room’s current state:
Divergent Styles, United Vision: Designing with a Teenager
When it comes to interior design, Bry and I have distinctly different tastes. While I appreciate vintage finds and eclectic charm, Bry, much like her friend Naomi, gravitates towards a clean, modern aesthetic. She prefers crisp lines, contemporary pieces, and isn’t afraid of incorporating bold choices. She enjoys color but prefers a curated palette, typically sticking to just a couple of harmonious hues within a space.
This makeover, like many real-life home projects, will be undertaken with a pretty tight budget in mind. This means we’ll be embarking on some treasure hunts for unique pieces and certainly repurposing a few items she already owns, giving them a fresh, modern twist. The most exciting aspect of this project is that we are giving Bry total creative control. Every color choice, every piece of decor, every little detail will be dictated by her vision. My role is to facilitate, guide, and help bring her dreams to life within our budgetary and practical constraints. This approach not only empowers her but also ensures the final space is truly hers.
Together, we’ve brainstormed and compiled a comprehensive guide for her new space – a mood board, if you will, that captures the essence of her ideal room. This collaborative process has been incredibly rewarding, allowing us to connect over design and create something truly special. Here’s what we’ve envisioned:
Unveiling Bry’s Modern Teen Sanctuary: The Design Plan
- Light Grey Walls: A Versatile Canvas
We’re opting for a soft, light grey for the walls. This choice provides a serene and sophisticated backdrop that perfectly complements Bry’s modern aesthetic. Grey is incredibly versatile, allowing other colors and textures to pop, and it creates a calm atmosphere conducive to both study and relaxation. It’s a foundational element that will ground the entire design, ensuring the room feels cohesive and contemporary. - Retaining Her Current Lighting: Smart and Stylish
The existing light fixture in her room is a stylish piece that already aligns with her modern preferences, so it’s staying put. This is a smart budget-friendly decision that doesn’t compromise on style. We’ll simply integrate it seamlessly into the new design, ensuring it continues to provide ample, aesthetically pleasing illumination for her space. - Her Beloved Ikea Hemnes Bed: A Timeless Classic
Her current bed, the Hemnes 4-poster from Ikea, is a sturdy, timeless piece that she loves. It provides a strong, classic silhouette that can be easily modernized with new bedding and accessories. Keeping her current bed not only saves on cost but also ensures she has a comfortable, familiar foundation for her new room. We’ll explore ways to style it to reflect her evolving taste. - Essential Clothing Storage: Functionality Meets Style
This is a critical item on our list. Bry desperately needs more organized clothing storage. Thankfully, I scored a fantastic find on Craigslist yesterday – a piece with great potential! This secondhand treasure is a testament to our budget-conscious approach. We’re currently debating between painting it a vibrant coral, which would tie into a potential accent color, or a sleek black for a more dramatic, modern statement. The final decision will, of course, be Bry’s, ensuring the piece fits perfectly into her vision. - A Personalized Gallery Wall: Expressing Her Story
A gallery wall is essential for a teenager’s room. It’s the perfect opportunity for Bry to showcase her personality, interests, and cherished memories. This highly personalized feature will likely include a mix of art prints that resonate with her, photographs of friends and family, and perhaps some inspirational quotes or mementos. It will be a dynamic focal point, easily changeable as her tastes evolve. - Trendy Lighted Marquee Letters: A Bright Statement
Bry is really into lighted marquee letters, and we think they’ll make a fantastic statement piece above her headboard. This trendy element will add a touch of industrial chic and a warm, inviting glow to her room. Whether spelling out her initial, a favorite word, or a simple design, it will create a personalized focal point that captures her youthful energy and modern style. - Dedicated Workspace: Fueling Academic Success
Currently, Bry does her homework at the dining room table, which isn’t ideal for focused study. As she heads into 8th grade, having a dedicated workspace in her room is paramount. We’re planning to incorporate a functional desk area where she can concentrate, organize her school supplies, and develop good study habits. This addition will undoubtedly be a welcome change, promoting productivity and fostering a sense of independence. - Full-Length Dressing Mirror: Practicality and Style
Every teenager needs a dressing mirror! Not only is it practical for getting ready each day, but a strategically placed mirror can also make a room feel larger and brighter by reflecting light. We’re looking for a stylish, full-length mirror that complements her modern aesthetic, whether it’s a sleek floor-standing model or a chic wall-mounted option. - Extra Seating: The Ultimate Hangout Spot
A teenager’s room isn’t complete without a comfortable spot for friends to hang out. We plan to include some extra seating, perhaps a stylish bean bag, a comfortable armchair, or a cool floor cushion. This will create an inviting social corner, perfect for movie nights, study groups, or simply relaxing with her pals. It adds an essential layer of comfort and functionality. - A Vibrant, Colorful Rug: Defining the Space
To tie the entire room together and add a much-needed pop of color, we’re planning a colorful rug. I particularly love the idea of it being the same accent color as her fun-colored ceiling. This will create a harmonious flow, add warmth underfoot, and define the different zones within her room, transforming it into a truly cohesive and inviting space.
Beyond the Mood Board: Finishing Touches and Future Fun
In addition to these core elements, we’ll also be bringing in much-needed window treatments. These aren’t just for aesthetics; they are crucial for privacy, light control, and enhancing the overall comfort of her room. We’ll explore options that blend seamlessly with her modern style, adding texture and sophistication. A few other “bits and bobs” – thoughtful accessories, personal touches, and textile layers like throw pillows and blankets – will round out the space, making it feel finished, comfortable, and uniquely Bry’s. Every detail, no matter how small, will contribute to creating a sanctuary where she can truly thrive.
I’m incredibly excited to embark on this journey with Bry and to create a space that she will absolutely adore and enjoy for years to come. This isn’t just a room makeover; it’s about fostering her independence, celebrating her individuality, and providing her with a personal haven as she navigates her teenage years. Stay tuned for updates as we bring this vision to life!
Happy weekend, friends. Until next time, loves…
