The Ultimate Kids’ Bedroom Makeover: Isaiah & Jayden’s Cheerful Twins’ Room Reveal
Following the incredible outpouring of love and enthusiasm for Andrea’s bedroom reveal last week, I am absolutely thrilled to share the next chapter of what has quickly become one of my most cherished and challenging design projects to date. Get ready for a truly monumental transformation as we dive into the first of three full bedroom makeovers, starting today with a space designed for boundless energy and joy.
A Dream Collaboration for a Deeply Personal Project
A few months ago, an exciting conversation unfolded between myself and my dear friend, the incredibly talented Emily Henderson. Yes, that Emily Henderson! We sparked a brilliant idea: to join forces for one of her renowned “Feel Good Makeovers” and tackle a truly ambitious undertaking – reimagining all three bedrooms for my niece and nephews. This wasn’t just any design challenge; it was an opportunity to create deeply personal and impactful spaces for children who truly deserve them.
As if transforming three full bedrooms within the span of a single week wasn’t ambitious enough, we decided to infuse the entire project with a generous dose of holiday magic. It might sound a little crazy, but the year 2020 highlighted the universal need for all the warmth, joy, and festive cheer we could possibly gather. Emily recently shared her insights on our collaborative journey on her blog a couple of weeks ago, and over the next three consecutive days, I’ll be unveiling each of these special rooms here. Today, we begin with the vibrant and playful sanctuary we crafted for the twins.
More Than Just a Makeover: Building a Sense of Home
Before we fully immerse ourselves in the design specifics and the beautiful “after” photos, I want to share the profound personal significance and emotional weight behind this project. Many of you know how much my sister means to me, but if you’ve followed my journey for a while and across social media, you’re equally aware of my immense love for her children. Being an aunt is, without a doubt, one of my most favorite things in the world, and this project allowed me to express that love in a tangible way.
My sister’s profession demands extraordinary sacrifice. She serves our country, and no one feels the weight of her deployments more acutely than her children. They grow up with the understanding that their mom could be called away at any moment, for any duration, and they navigate each deployment with incredible resilience and bravery. For years, living on opposite coasts meant I couldn’t provide the hands-on support I longed to offer for her and her children. Now, being just around the corner, I can finally be there for them in a way I couldn’t before.
As a veteran myself, I intimately understand the immense stress and emotional toll of deployment, particularly the constant worry about loved ones back home. The ability to alleviate even a fraction of that burden for my sister, by ensuring her children have comforting, stable, and joyful spaces to call their own, means the absolute world to me. This project isn’t merely about aesthetics; it’s about providing a deeply needed sense of security, happiness, and normalcy amidst the inherent uncertainties of military life.
Growing up as a military child instills a unique and powerful perspective: home is wherever you are sent, and it’s what you make of it. This very experience profoundly influenced my path to becoming a designer. Frequent moves meant constantly adapting to new environments, but I always found solace and stability in making my own room feel special, no matter where we lived. It transformed temporary housing into a personal sanctuary, fostering a deep sense of belonging wherever we landed. This personal history fuels my passion for empowering others to personalize their homes and spaces, irrespective of their situation or how long they plan to stay.
When my sister moved into her new house, ensuring my niece and nephews had rooms that felt uniquely theirs, spaces where they could thrive and feel truly settled, was a top priority. We have no idea how long they will reside here, but I wanted them to feel a deep sense of permanence and ownership, countering any transient feelings. This was especially crucial given that their new house began as a completely blank slate, offering no pre-existing character or comfort.
Bringing the Vision to Life: A Partnership Fueled by Creativity and Care

I was incredibly grateful when both Emily Henderson and Target enthusiastically said “yes” to this ambitious undertaking. Our game plan quickly took shape, involving a series of weekly Zoom meetings, countless phone calls, and texts. Collaborating to craft three distinct and unique designs for each child’s space was an absolute delight. I had a very clear and defined vision for the look and feel of each room, and both Emily and Target fully embraced it, granting me the creative freedom necessary to bring these visions to vibrant life. Their trust in my design aesthetic was invaluable.
The original plan involved Emily and her talented crew joining me for a week to complete each space together as a hands-on team, documenting the entire process across social media and video. However, the unforeseen circumstances of 2020 had other plans. For everyone’s safety and well-being, we collectively decided against any non-essential travel. Undeterred by this shift, and with the invaluable assistance of a fantastic local design assistant, Jordan, we successfully brought these dream rooms to fruition, proving that creativity and persistence can overcome any challenge.
Introducing the Dynamic Duo: Isaiah & Jayden’s Cheerful Retreat
Now, let’s turn our attention to the very first room reveal: the twins’ bedroom! Isaiah and Jayden are three years old, and they are, in every sense of the word, double the trouble and double the fun! They are the quintessential embodiment of curious, mischievous, and utterly adorable toddler twin energy. I’ve been completely and utterly obsessed with them since the minute they entered the world, and designing a space specifically for them, one that mirrors their vibrant personalities, was an immense pleasure.

For their room, my primary goal was to create a space that felt unmistakably bright, cheerful, and full of energetic charm – a true reflection of their personalities. Given their young age, the twins couldn’t offer direct input on the design, so I focused on key elements that would benefit both them and my sister, ensuring maximum functionality and longevity. This included incorporating ample storage solutions to keep their toys organized, designing a room they could comfortably grow into over at least the next couple of years, and fostering a loving environment perfect for sharing. My sister was also eager to transition them from toddler beds to twin beds, a crucial functional update we made sure to incorporate into the design plan from the outset.
All of the bedrooms in the new house were, to put it mildly, blank slates that left much to be desired. They presented pristine, uninspired canvases, which meant even a thoughtful and vibrant transformation could breathe entirely new life into them. Let’s take a moment to recall what their room looked like before this exciting overhaul, to truly appreciate the extent of the transformation.
Before the Magic: Awaiting a Personality

The “before” pictures truly illustrate the raw potential of the space. It was a clean slate, devoid of character, warmth, or the vibrant personality of its young inhabitants. The challenge was to transform this utilitarian and somewhat sterile space into a functional, inspiring, and joyful environment that celebrated childhood, while also integrating festive holiday elements.
The Grand Reveal: A Festive, Functional Wonderland for Two
And here’s what it looks like now – a vibrant testament to thoughtful design and the incredible power of collaboration!

Their new room fills my heart with immense happiness! It’s fun, undeniably bright, and perfectly tailored for these two energetic boys. At the very foundation of the design, I envisioned a cheerful, inviting base color, and yellow immediately came to mind for its vibrant and uplifting qualities. The room also boasts an interesting architectural shape, which I saw not as a challenge, but an exciting opportunity. We capitalized on its unique layout by consciously dividing the space into three distinct, highly functional zones: a dedicated area for peaceful sleep, ample storage solutions to keep clutter at bay, and a vibrant play zone for imaginative adventures.
Through careful and meticulous space planning, we managed to comfortably fit two twin beds, a sturdy bookcase for their growing collection of stories and toys, a dresser (strategically placed where the festive tree currently stands, offering essential clothing storage), and a charming table and chairs set—perfect for the boys to engage in creative play, drawing, or quiet activities. This meticulous space planning was absolutely critical, as this room needed to function exceptionally well for two active toddlers who will be sharing it. Once we finalized the optimal layout and addressed the essential basics like comfortable, durable furniture and practical window treatments, it was time to fully embrace the holiday spirit!
I wanted their room to exude a casual, whimsical, and colorful holiday ambiance that felt truly magical for young children. To achieve this, we incorporated numerous soft, plush details – from cozy blankets and throws to festive, character-driven pillows – and crowned the space with a delightful Christmas tree curated especially for them, complete with kid-friendly ornaments. Every element was chosen intentionally to ignite their imagination, encourage play, and bring a constant smile to their faces, making it a truly magical place during the festive season and beyond.

The Unforgettable Impact: Joy and Enduring Peace of Mind
The boys (and my sister, too!) absolutely adore their new room. They now spend countless hours in this space, playing, reading, and simply enjoying their personalized sanctuary. Witnessing their palpable happiness and infectious excitement brings me an indescribable amount of joy – it’s truly the greatest reward of this entire project. This transformation holds even deeper significance because my sister is scheduled for another deployment any day now. Knowing these spaces are complete, providing comfort, stability, and joy for her children before she leaves, offers both of us immense peace of mind during what will undoubtedly be a challenging time. It’s a gift of love and stability that will last far beyond the holiday season.
