Interview: Living and Loving in a Small NYC Home

Megan graciously shared her wisdom and experiences with us through a candid Q&A session. Let’s dive into her insights on making the most of every square foot in one of the world’s busiest cities.

Where/What city do you live in?

Astoria, Queens, NYC. Living in Astoria offers a vibrant community feel with a surprising amount of green space and stunning waterfront views of Manhattan. It’s a fantastic neighborhood for families, blending urban convenience with a strong sense of local identity, making it an ideal, albeit competitive, place to find a small home in NYC.

Who do you share your home with?

My husband, our two wonderful kids, and our two beloved cats. Soon, we’ll be welcoming our third child, adding another layer of joyful complexity and requiring even more creative solutions for our growing family in this small home. It’s a testament to how much love and life can truly fit into a compact space.

Do you own or rent?

We rent. In a city like New York, renting is a common reality for many families. It presents its own set of challenges, especially when considering making permanent design changes, but it also fosters ingenuity in maximizing existing layouts and temporary decor solutions.

How many sq ft is your home?

Approximately 700 square feet. For a family of (soon to be) five plus two pets, 700 square feet in NYC is a significant design and organizational feat. This dimension truly underscores the intentionality and smart design choices Megan and her family have implemented to create a functional and beautiful living environment.

What do you love most about small space living?

I absolutely adore that it’s not overwhelming in size and feels incredibly cozy. There’s a certain intimacy that small spaces foster; everything feels close-knit and manageable. Cleaning and maintenance are less daunting, and it encourages a more mindful approach to possessions. It forces you to be intentional about every item you bring into your home, leading to a clutter-free and more harmonious environment. This conscious curation creates a sense of calm and warmth that larger homes sometimes struggle to achieve.

What challenges have you faced?

Finding a happy medium for my shared living room, which also serves as my office space, has been the biggest hurdle. Our living room has a rather funky, unconventional shape, which initially made furniture arrangement and space planning quite a puzzle. It’s taken almost three years of trial and error to figure out what truly works for the room’s unique dimensions and our family’s needs. We’re still adjusting and refining, constantly looking for ways to optimize this multi-functional area, proving that small space design is often an evolving journey.

Any unique storage solutions?

Absolutely! Baskets and hidden storage are my absolute best friends; they are literally everywhere. We leverage every conceivable nook and cranny. This includes storage ottomans that double as extra seating, under-bed storage containers for seasonal items, vertical shelving units that draw the eye upwards, and furniture pieces with built-in drawers. Every piece of furniture must serve at least two purposes. Baskets are fantastic for corralling toys, blankets, and various bits and bobs, keeping surfaces clear and maintaining a sense of order without sacrificing style.

What’s your favorite room in your home?

Without a doubt, it’s our living room. I am completely obsessed with its moody, deep pink walls. Choosing such a bold, saturated color for a small space might seem counterintuitive to some, but it has truly transformed the room into a vibrant, personality-filled haven. It creates an unexpected depth and warmth, making the space feel incredibly inviting and chic rather than confined. It’s a powerful statement that reflects our family’s vibrant personality.

Do you ever wish you had more space?

Honestly, only when it comes to storage issues. With a growing family and all the necessities that come with it – clothing, toys, books, and baby gear – the need for more dedicated storage can sometimes feel pressing. However, beyond that, I genuinely love our tiny space. It encourages creativity, intentionality, and keeps our family close, both physically and emotionally. The benefits of a cozy, well-managed small home far outweigh the occasional longing for an extra closet.

Best piece of small space living advice?

My number one piece of advice is simple but crucial: get and stay organized. This isn’t just about tidiness; it’s about having a system. Small spaces can very easily become cluttered and messy if everything doesn’t have a special home or a designated place to go at the end of the day. Implement a “one in, one out” rule, invest in smart storage solutions, and make decluttering a regular practice. A well-organized small home feels much larger, calmer, and more functional, truly enhancing your quality of life.

Embracing Boldness and Intentionality in Your Home

Megan’s insights truly resonate with the core philosophy of small space living: it’s not about what you lack in square footage, but what you gain in intentionality, creativity, and coziness. I mean, how utterly fabulous are those gorgeous magenta walls in her living space? As you can imagine, I absolutely adore that she fearlessly embraced such a highly saturated color in her small home. It’s so unexpected, so daring, and yet it works so beautifully, creating a powerful focal point and an atmosphere of undeniable charm and personality. It challenges the conventional wisdom that small spaces should always be light and neutral, proving that bold choices can pay off spectacularly.

Megan’s journey reminds us that living in a smaller home doesn’t mean sacrificing style, comfort, or the joy of a growing family. Instead, it fosters an environment of resourcefulness, thoughtful design, and a deep appreciation for every curated detail. Her home in Astoria is a vibrant testament to the fact that with a bit of ingenuity and a lot of heart, any space, no matter its size, can be transformed into a beloved sanctuary. The challenges she faces, like the quirky living room shape, are met with an admirable persistence, turning potential frustrations into opportunities for creative problem-solving.

Thank you so incredibly much, Megan, for opening your beautiful, inspiring home to us today and for sharing your invaluable wisdom on navigating the intricacies of small space living in one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Your ability to create such a stylish, functional, and warm environment for your expanding family is truly inspirational.
